Astro, I don't know exactly where you live in Seattle but Tacoma is not far. There is a store called Tradewinds thar sells pigeon feed and supplies and all sorts of bird stuff. It is a nice place to visit and ask questions as pigeon flyers own it. Also they have combine meetings there which would be a good way to meet flyers in your area. Here is info copied and pasted form web site http://www.clubresults.homestead.com/ "Hi all, We have a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 8th @1 pm, at Tradewinds, to discuss the upcoming bird ordinance that the Pierce County council will be voting on February 14th. Councilman Dick Muri will be here and we are unsure whether Roger Bush will make it or not. This meeting is going to be for the members of the AU. We have a different meeting scheduled for Wednesday Feb. 1st @ 1:30 pm for other interested parties. There is strength in numbers so all are welcome. Hope to see you all there, Patti Galloway Tradewinds Feeds 2339 Tacoma Ave. So Tacoma WA 98402 253-272-4887"

MsPigeon replied to pigeon's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Astro, I wrote to you on another thread. Please do write me and I will try to direct you to people closer to you for help. Carol -
Hi Astropigeon, I live south of Seattle near Aberdeen. I belong to a club in Centrailia, but there are lots of clubs nearer you. And if you join a club and a national Organization like the American Racing Pigeon Union (AU) they have "Help a Beginner Programs". Here are some site to check out: http://www.pigeon.org/index.html http://www.racing-pigeons.com/ http://www.clubresults.homestead.com/ http://www.racingpigeonmall.com/ But I would be happy to gift you birds if you get a place for them and have your parents permission. Thanks, I have also heard that Hyacinth. I was just hoping maybe they would make em better. The competition may bring the price down as well. I agree, little or no problems with Unikon and Unikon bands. Just expensive.

Don't you just love that book Ray? I got it for Christmas! Carol

What a great idea Bruno, I just googled "Vanodine 18" does sound great for protecting our race birds. I'm going to suggest this at our next club meeting. We already voted in to use seperate shipping crates for each flyer when fisible. But V 18 would be a good alternative when we couldn't. Carol

I just checked out your sight Glassfeather, that is very interesting. Thanks for shareing that with us. The picture at the bottom looks like an eater basket full of colored birds instead of eggs. LOL
-
Cool picture Glassfeather. I wonder how they get such good bright colors on there darker birds like that.

In USA Rit dye is found at even a grocery store. It's just household type dye for fabric.
-
I know of a release business in my neck of the woods that dies their white pigeons to match the wedding colors. They just put their hand over the pigeons face and dip them in a bucket of water and rit die. They have even suggested that an off colored bird flying with their team keeps the hawks deterred.

I don't wish to get into this debat but I just had some information to add about the nature of the disease. The microscopic single-celled organisms, Trichomonas columbae protozoans, that cause canker can only survive for a few minutes once outside the bird. Birds cannot become infected from the loft or immediate enviroment. It is spread between birds, transmitted by saliva or pigeon milk. Saliva cantaminates food and water, adult birds billing and parents feeding their babies are usually how the organisms are transmitted. Yours in the sport. Carol

Ray, I have ventilation under the eaves as well and windows front and rear that I open and close accordingly, usually open most days and closed most nights. What I mean by a draft is can they roost without a breeze blowing right on them. Carol

Thats a good point Rose. In our club we, the 50 or so YO flyers, were once considered the young ones in the club. The older guys really drug their feet about ETS. But in the end they realized it was us they needed to keep happy as there years left in pigeon racing are few. They realized to keep the sport and our club alive they must change with the times and the wishes of the younger flyers. Now that we have three Jr members about 12 OY, I really want to keep them happy and nurture their interests in pigeons. Besides special awards for them we are now incorporating a speaker into each meeting to learn more about pigeons and keeping a healthy flock. Last year we only had 2 Jr's and it spread to a friend so maybe it will keep spreading to their friends. Yours in the sport. Carol

I would also like to thank Webmaster for donating birds for me. Thank You Richard. Yours in the sport. Carol

I keep them and race them bewted. I also do releases when asked, but am not really in the businees, at least not yet. I really just wanted to develop a team of whites that I could race and win with. I found that it took me three years to get winning white birds. Mind you I worked with what was given at first. I have since bought an occasional breeder to mix in with mine. But mainly I focus on breeding the ones that race well to get more that race well. Carol

Have a GOOD one Bill! AND MANY MORE! Carol

I think you have some very good advice bewted, from both sides of the coin. I would most definately get into it again if I were you. But I'm not you. Like has been said, you get out of it what you put in. It doesn't have to cost a lot or take all your time, but it does for me. It does have a cost and it does take time though. As for the negative members causing problems, just stay out of it, keep your comments to yourself so as not to take sides, just listen to them all and fly your birds. yours in the sport. Carol

That is wonderful Alan!!!! You are SO right, we need to do more things like what you are doing. I know our club is thrilled to have 3 Jr members flying this year. So we are having special Jr awards and a seperate race sheet so they won't get discouraged. We definatly need to promote youngsters in our dieing sport. Carol

Hi Ray, I think Bruno has excellent advice with the two symptom rule. I also think it is very good that you are so observant and on top of the first signs of a problem. You might check for a draft, I don't find my birds ruffled in the cold unless they are in a draft. At any rate do keep an eye on them. Sometimes it only takes some stress for a disease or illness to come out. Carol
