Which Way Should The Loft Face?
mushroom replied to GypUK's topic in Novices, Beginners & Young Fanciers
Birds will trap easier in to a prevailing wind -
The biggest problem would probably be from the local cat population.

Well put Owen, should rspb seek to ban pigeon racing, there would be nothing for bop to eat.
-
I totally agree, personally I would like to see any age racing from may until july then finish as all the young are fledging from the Falcon and Hawk population, pigeons are now a very important part of these killers diet, in fact I would say they totally rely on racing pigeons for their breeding cycle.

Since moving to my new location I have found that the ybs will not roam for more than half an hour (if they roam at all), and they usually drop straight on to the loft looking skywards. I started training my early bred ybs last week, as I watched over the peat moss I saw the ybs circle around the trees which are about 3/4 mile from my loft before they would cross over the open space, on the second toss the birds took an age to come with 13 missing overnight,7 returned the next day one of the birds had secondaries missing from both wings and half a tail, a sure sign of PF attack, yesterday I had a yb grabbed by a SH hen, which is virtually a daily occurence, so it is really difficult to achieve a decent level of fitness with old or ybs, as the birds are permanently on their guard and do not want to be in the sky, I am afraid the pigeon world needs to stand up and be heard otherwise, its goodnight.

Thanks John and Jock I hope they do you both a good turn, atb Tom.

The 2 young birds for Lot 1 chipped out yesterday so will be ready 3rd week of April.

Monday 1 hen killed by S/H I then let the cocks out when 2 PF came over looking at them but, they both moved away and went through a team of trainers, scattering them. Thursday S/H grabbed one of the hens but the dog scared it off, Today cock PF coursed my early bred ybs scattering them but caught nothing, I travel 12 miles to my loft every day 365 days a year and I am feeling that I am just doing it to feed this constant menace. These attacks destroy the confidence of the birds and they will not exercise properly as they are always on pins. Believe it or not when I first let my early bred ybs out within 15 minutes a juvenile Buzzard chased one of my ybs and caught it as it hit the ground,I have lost count of the number of attacks my birds have had to endure, I am going to see the season out and will decide wether to carry on or not.

I usually give a 5 day canker treatment as I feel a one day course is not sufficient, I do not jag within 14 days either side of any treatment just in case the treatment has any effect on the vaccine and the birds are always separated whilst treating and jagging.

Its safer to use a nom de plume because using your real name gives scammers a foothold, I do not wish to know anyones name it is none of my busines.s I like others come on to seek and offer advice, the mods know who everyone is anyway I am sure we dont need any profile policemen.

The best advice I can give you is that when you go in to the loft, always remember that it is THEIR home and not YOUR loft.

Worms can and will burrow through the gut wall, so I would think starving them would be a bad idea, also 3 days without food would stress the birds out and make them poke about in all the nooks and crannies of the loft floor. The measure I use for Eqvalan is one notch(ie- between the arrows) to 2 pints on the advice of the late David Palmer vet. It is the only wormer I have used where you can actually see the worms as they come out in the droppings,if you have a heavy infection you must repeat the dose after 10 days, I usually spray everything with household bleach at a mixture of one cupful of bleach to a gallon of water. The best way to mix the Eqvalan is to put a cupful of warm water in to a plastic milk carton and shake it,then top up with cold water,it is also best to give it a shake just before giving it, as it settles slowly to the bottom.

Well done to you and Ian and the bidders and buyers.Good Luck with the rest of the sale. Tom.

I paired all stock and racers end of october, to get them back in to the breeding cycle before it gets too cold they will then be split and re paired when the last flight is up.

I start my ybs 10 yards from the loft, facing the loft doors. They are basketted for a couple of hours with the drinkers on then teased with the food tin shaking for a few minutes, they are then liberated and after 3-4 days they go straight from the basket in to be fed. Training will not begin until the ybs know what is expected of them. They need to know that when they are basketted they are expected to go straight home where they will be fed, any bird that does not come straight in does not get fed until the next day.Needless to say the birds must have an appetite when training.
