  1. what size are your pics?
  2. You have at least given them some tosses as youngbirds so they have some idea whats required of them. I would train them paired on good fine days, keep them at home if there are any cold easterly winds, even to the point of missing the first few races if they are not ready. What you need to remember these are your future team, treat them gently this year as untried yearlings so you have some 2yr olds for next year as well as your yearlings which will have hopefully been raced this year as youngbirds.
  3. twoooooooooooooooooooooo!, let me know which you want Chris or come and take your pick when there are some ready.
  4. it may be worth posting a pic to identify what you have there but head twisting is associated with Paramyxovirus. Keep this bird isolated from your others.
  5. well done to all concerned!
  6. they are just as fast as anything else, its all down to breeding, exactly the same as it is with blues and cheqs etc
  7. got to pair up 1st

    Pigeons in school

Depending on there ages you could always have a little competition, fastest to clock in etc. Obviously not if there todlers and not removing the rubber from a real pigeon but think of things that will entertain them and retain there attention.

    hurt by laying

If the birds have regular, clean fresh grit then being without any for a couple of days while maybe shut in a box with the cockbird isn't going to cause them a defficiency! Do the birds in the transporter during holdover get grit, NO, do they all fall out of the transporter after a 5 day holdover, NO and some of the cockbirds in the bakets may have been chasing others around almost continualy! Phil

  13. I think they only class them as racing pigeons when in transort for liberation etc, customs will just class them as poultry. If you are not careful they won't let them in as has happened a few times with birds brought back from Lier etc having to be left on the dockside!
  14. How is your daughter now Damian?
  15. Prob is pigeons are classed as poultry!
  16. spoiling the bean and barley merchants! ;D ;D ;D
  17. in the case of a lot of federations feed is provided by sponsors, i.e bucktons etc but if the fed buy the feed it will be just an average mixture. They can not be expected to carry 50 different mixes and is just one of the things you have to accept when you race.
  18. I thought there were restrictions, you may find more info on your DEFRA equivelant web site.
  19. All well planned, good luck for 2009!
  20. Well done Damien, see vents in the front and guess the air escapes through the ridge but have you any vents at the back? Phil
  21. racing should start mid may and go on until October when often the weathers better but for some reason people want to start every year at the earliest possible date with little concern for the birds especialy yearlings. Phil

    hurt by laying

milk in the drinker and limestone grit will prevent the problem if given prior to laying, calcium tablet will help if the hen has a deficiency but it makes you wonder if the hen has any other underlying problems.

also put a couple of teaspoons of milk in the drinker and if you can get it give them some limestone grit.
  24. firstly the ring number is incomplete, there is a letter missing. It should read GB xx A(etc) then 5 numbers. if the 97 is after the GB then the union will not have a record of the original owner being over 10 years old. Somebody may have an old ring list but its more likely somebody has sold it to somebody in your country.
