  9. after visiting this exhibition , i think fifer relly needs some gratitude, it was so interesting, with photos of most of the war pigeons ,and what they had acheived, old rp,s dated 1906 photo of winkie the first pigeon to get the dicken medal, also a photo of the dicken medal, and really so much more ,that there was a report in the local paper about it.when i spoke to the curator, he became that interested he was firing questions all ways , he said he never ever thought about pigeons that way, in other words he was amazed, and im quite sure a lot of the public would have been as well.,,,there was lovely mention of the fifers pigeon quote PURDY,,,,,ARCHIE HERD FROM LEVEN WAS THE ONLY FANCIER IN SCOTLAND TO HAVE A BIRD SELECTED FOR THE LIBERATION OF 50 WHITE PIGEONS TO COMMEMORATE THE QUEENS JUBILEE. BIRDS WERE RELEASED FROM STAFFORDSHIRE BY QUEEN ELIZBETH 11 ON 3D OF JULY 2002, WHEN ARCHIES PIGEON CAME HOME, HE WAS ADOPTED BY ST AGATHAS PRIMARY SCHOOL AND NAMED"" PURDEY",one thing that caught my eye was a lovely , amusing poem written by jim douglas, which went like this ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I HAVE A HOMING PIGEON, ITS A LOVELY SHADE OF BLUE BY JINGS IT IS A GOOD ONE THATS WHY I LOVE IT LIKE A DOO IT FEEDS ON WHEAT AND BARLEY AND SOMETIMES LIKES A PEA AHM FOND O MA WEE PIGEON AND MA PIGEONS FOND O ME MA WIFE GOT KINDA JEALOUS O THE BONNY WEE BLUE BURD SHE TOOK THE HUFF FOR AGES AND HARDLY SAID A WORD THEN SAID I CANNA HELP IT NAE MATTER HOW I TRY AHM NO THAT FOND O PIGEONS BUT IM FOND O PIGEON PIE ITS GETTING NEAR DECEMBER AND STILL YIR ON THE DOLE IT COULD BE CHRISTMAS DINNER PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IT AW BOILS DOON TO THIS ITS EITHER IT OR ME A LUMP CAME TAE MA THROAT AND A TEAR SPRANG TAE MY EE AH SAID DINNY BE SILLY MA PIGEONS JUST A BURD AHLL RING ITS NECK FOR XMAS THATS FINE, SHE ALLMOST PURRED OAN XMAS EVE AH GRABBED THE DOO AND GEED ITS NECK A SQUEEZE BUT I LOST MA RESOLUTION WHEN IT BEGAN TO WHEESE AH SAID ,MY POOR WE BURDIE AH CANNY TAKE YER LIFE BUT ONE O YOU HAS GOT TO GO SO ITLL HAVE TO BE THE WIFE NOO MY WIFE HAS NEVER LEFT ME IT SEEMS SHES FLOWN THE NEST ITS MAYBE JUST THE HOLIDAY TAE GIE HER TONGUE A REST IS SHE A ROAMER OR A HOMER AHL HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE BUTMA LIFE IS AWFULL PEACEFULL THERES JUST MA BURD AN ME AH SIT UP IN MA DOOCOTE AND LISTEN TAE IT COO AND THE MORE I SEE O PEOPLE THE MORE AH LOVE MA DOO. ;D ;D ;D i think the last day is iith feb, so its worth a visit and its completely free, a great job done by the fifer

  15. trying to remember way back my old dad saying that the 2 outside toes between the centre toe can deternine the sex of the squab, the hen youngster has toes of equal length, and the cocks two outside toes are slightly differant in size, as in later ln life its the cock that treads the hen, and seemingly for grip or balance, but true or not im not sure [the old so and so was not wrong very often]thats about 50 years ago he said that :)
  16. i reckon aqua gaurd would be good for sterilizing the water in he transporters, but i know there would be people against it as it contains chlorine, but as far as i can see its been tried and tested, , virkon s would be another one along with vanodine, these are both iodine based, we used to get aquas iodine from the chemist years ago, as cheap as chips, or milton ;D ;D ;D
  17. ive tried the baby milk powder, reared up cracking yb,s
  18. tam i never condemed you for defending your birds, if you read my post ,i said" you do what you want to do," if you read all my posts youll see im very much against the rspb, maybe youll get my drift in the very first post, but as bruno has pointe out in the post above " there could be light at the end of the tunnel" and as far as the rspb going bankrupt , there are very rich people dying leaving all their money to the rspb,,,regular , thousands of pounds, i still stand by what i say, you do what you want to do , thats nothing do do with me, but the problem must be solved legally
  19. nice to be nice, that was really good appreciation for pigeon basics, hyacinth, the good thing about it is we can all talk our mind without falling out, and the info on pigeons, are second to none, weve a lot to thank the webmaster for, breath of fresh air , that post, im sure most of us agree, good luck hyacinth :)
  20. SORRY TO SAY MOBTER, YOUR BIRDS ARE IN NO CONDITION TO BREED
  21. THE BIRDS WILL TELL YOU MOBSTER, THEYLL EAT WHAT THEY NEED :)
  22. I TOOK HUNDREDS OF RINGS TO THE SHU A FEW YEARS AGO, ALONG WITH THE LETTERS FROM THE GAMEKEEPERS THAT FOUND THEM , AT THE PERIGRINES SITES NESTS] , THESE RINGS [,ACCORDING TO THE GAMEKEEPERS LETTERS] WERE PICKED UP #.AFTER #THE RSPB CLEARED THE NESTS OF PIGEON RINGS,# THESE RINGS WERE FOUND AT MANY DIFFERANT PLACES COVERING THE NORTH OF ENGLAND AND THE SOUTH OF SCOTLAND, THER HAVE BEEN MANY PEOPLE CONVICTED OF STEALING EGGS AND CHICKS, THAT WERE VIDEOD BY THE RSPB, COULD THE SHOE BE PUT ON THE OTHER FOOT, IF THESE RSPB MEN WERE FILMED STEALING OUR PIGEON RINGS , COULD THEY BE CHARGED???
  23. I SEE YOU CAN INSURE PETS IF SO, SURELY WE COULD INSURE OUR PIGEONS. TO MY MIND THE INSURERS WOULD GET INFO FROM THE RSPB, AS TO WHAT RISK THE HAWKS POSE, AND IM PRETTY SURE THE RSPB WOLD INFORM THEM THAT THERE WOULD BE LITTLE OR NO RISK, WELL IF THAT WAS THE CASE AND THERE WERE PLENTY OF CLAIMS,[ WHICH THERE WOULD BE] THEY WOULD UP THE PREMIUM, THUS PROOVING THE RSPB WRONG,,, JUST A THOUGHT.
  24. LOOKING BACK AT HYACINTHS POST, IS THERE ANY LAWYER OUT THERE , THAT WOULD BE ABLE TO TELL US IF WE COULD TAKE THE RSPB, TO THE SMALL CLAIMS COURT,,IF THERE WAS PROOF THAT THE HAWK KILLED YOUR BIRD???
  25. LOOKING AT THE WORSE SCENARIO, ABOUT BIRD FLU ON T,V THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT ,IF IT DID APPEAR IN UK, THERE WOULD BE A MASSIVE CULL OF FOWL AND SUCH LIKE, I TAKE IT THAT WOULD BE WATER FOWL AS WELL, AS MIGRATORY BIRDS THAT BREED HERE, SURELY THERE WOULD BE MORE DANGER WITH THE HAWKS CARRYING THIS DESEASE, AS THEY ARE COMMING IN TO CONTACT WITH, AND KILLING AND EATING ,POSSIBLY DESEASED BIRDS, THEREFORE WOULD IT NOT BE FAIR TO CULL THESE AS WELL,,, JUST A THOUGHT
