We have the gap at the top same as yours and we have screwed cable track to the soffet and on the inside we have rolled up 1/4 inch mesh to just over the diameter to the gap and these fit in snuggly and we can take them out if needed.

They are just the job, we have the same vents in wood which are varnished and they are smashing.
