you could simoplfy your feeding buy buying a pre mixed corn , and parent birds dont school there ybs but bringing them out of loft or allowing into a trap such as a sputnik so they can see out is a good thing as they get used to there enviroment -

well if there out most of the time not much need to seperate them as will have ample space to stay apart as wont be inside much , although the cock will bully the ybs until they mature just create perches so they can claim apart of loft as there home -

when the ybs are feathered under there wing then they should be feeding on there own that be a good time to seperate them from there parents , to stop them breeding buy some plastic eggs to swap with the real ones or you'l be over run in no time -

natural yoghurt promotes friendly bacteria in the gut also rich in calcium , baby milk probably another source of calcium and added vitamins but i prefer the yoghurt

I'll certainly answer , i only treat my birds when instructed to do so by a vet , i dont see any reason to treat unless a bird or birds are ailing , i believe birds have a great constitution and there first line of defense is there natural immune system and been strong and robust enough to fight infection via there immune system , medications should only be used when ailments are found , the greatest thing about vets they'll test to see which treatment has the best response to fight the ailments , treating blind can only do more damage and in some cases give the infection bacteria or parrasite a more favorable enviroment to take further hold of , also we must think over use of any medication can result in much stronger strains that are harder to erradicate . On that note i test my birds regulary with my vet and up to now never had Paratyphus , the only ailment i get is around may time which is canker in ybs this has been the case for the last two years and been tested and treated for by the vet , i feel that this is down to my management of my ybs and my management will differ slightly to compensate . I find my yearings and 2 years upwards hardly ever ail due to my managemnt and i don't treat on a 3 week cycle , i use more a prevenative measures than treatments hope this helps Mark

Starting Out(Advice Wanted)

well if was me i'd build two sets of boxes either 4 or 5 high at the back and then add your partion and corridor ( i would make the partion in such a way that it could be easily moved at a later date if you decide to increase the stock side / add another set of boxes ) i would also recommend an internal door of mesch so can leave the loft open in good weather also keeps rodents and small birds out , i look forward to your photos -
during breeding i give live natural yoghurt via the water plenty of grit and pickstones and vitamins , if race birds better to feed a good high protein mixture , some lofts feed tic beans and nothing else , but i believe this is more detrimental to the old birds feeding , i feel a good mix with a bit of added linseed and if wish to add more protein, then add protein pellets as long as have no antibiotics will breed healthy robust ybs

Starting Out(Advice Wanted)

vents in front at ground level and at back in top of roof you dont want air at roof level in front or you will create a draught rather than ventilation , to enable your planning of this loft perhaps a picture would help is the 12 ft rear or sides ???? -
Happy Birthday half a century old , now in tree terms your just a sappling , have a great day all the best Mark

Had a drop of snow this morning not much , but the suns out now , but plenty of grey cloud cover

normaly snoring is caused by something vibrating in the mouth , i suppose the first step is to find the cause , at this time of year the moult in the most important factor , it's important that the bird is fed properly with plenty of grit and minerals ( pickstones ) and a good protein feed with added linseed and some vitamins . During the moult which is a stressful time for the birds , birds can get a touch of canker , so first step would be to open the birds beak and look inside one look for any cheesy growth or candida white growth if neither is present look for anything which may be causing an obstruction it may of eaten something it shouldnt of done . The last factor will be is the loft ventilated enough if not then respirity could be a problem , this could be caused by you covering up at night , these are the factors i can get from what you've said , trying putting a bath in for your bird with warm water and a few drops of olbas oil and a bit of crushed garlic . It also could be down to the age of the bird , all the best Mark

Quite agree to the comments above it's good for novices and old hands alike to have access to a good vet especialy those that don't have one in there area , David is truely an asset to the site
-
welcome back global girl it sounds as if you have respirity problems , as you expected but you only have the one bird in loft , when you say covering him up what do you mean ???
-
might help if you take some photos and put them up , but sound like very good hens
