  10. Copied from Facebook Congratulations to Mr & Mrs D Quantrill from Lowestoft Provisional 1st Open Harkers Fraserburgh Race. David and Sheila were still in shock when I visited this morning, saying they couldn’t believe they had won! When David was told he could no longer drive due to health reasons, he had to think on his feet regarding how he could get his pigeons to the club each Friday evening…so he made a ‘transporter’ from an old shopping trolley and a piece of board, the 2 baskets get put onto their transporter and they walk it round to the Ness Point Club about 10 minutes away (see photo!) They were also thrilled that in Provisional 2nd Open, was their club mate Mollie Chamberlain (Mr & Mrs Chamberlain). When Mollie’s husband sadly died a while ago, Mollie took over the pigeons even though she wasn’t involved with them previously and started to fly them herself…and at nearly 89 she is doing a sterling job! Sheila wanted to thank their friends and fellow club members Mel & Sue Dyer for all their help and for taking theirs and Mollie’s birds on the 80 mile round trip to Norwich to be marked on Thursday morning, especially as Mel & Sue weren’t sending themselves! There will be a full race report on our website and in BHW shortly. Dilys
  11. Copied from Facebook Scottish National Flying Club Kettering Inland National On Saturday 30th of May the SNFC kick started the season racing from Kettering. A total of 320 members sent 3121 pigeons. They were liberated at 0545 into a light west wind turning south west. First open was G. Donaghy from Clydebank with his yearling cheq hen flying 288 miles 833 yards. Race Controllers report by R. White, J. Pryde and F. As the convoy moves north the weather at Peterborough and Melton Mowbray is 12 degrees and wind is two mph. Wolverhampton is showing 13 degrees at 0700 hours and two mph wind. Doncaster is showing 14 degrees, wind same speed and good visibility. Cannock at 0700 12 degrees and one mph wind. Darlington at 0800 15 degrees, five mph south west and visibility very good. Newcastle 0900 hours 17 degrees, four mph and good visibility. Lymm 0900 17 degrees, four mph and good visibility. Shap 1000 15 degrees, eleven mph south south west wind and good visibility. As they move north into the Scottish Borders the weather is good with the temperature rising. After midday light rain showers are expected in the east and west of Scotland, however visibility very good. A good race is expected. Section A 1st Section A, 4th open, J & B Morgan The husband and wife partnership of Johnny and Brenda Morgan from Lockerbie are first South Section. Having formerly worked with traditional bloodlines on the conventional method, Johnny read about what other fanciers were achieving with modern bloodlines and made contact with a very successful loft in England to purchase stock, acquiring examples of the Willy Jacobs, Van den Bulck and Romein Klein families, the Romein Klein lines, being based on the family of Stewart Knowles. Johnny and Brenda initially purchased pigeons for stock and were so pleased with the offspring that they produced that they made further contact with the breeders and purchased further examples of the families mentioned to race. Since they acquired the pigeons Johnny and Brenda have achieved a succession of top results with the club, Federation and the National, consider that the partners were 1st Section 11th Open from Kettering 2024, 2nd Section 43rd Open from Reading in 2025 and one year down the road are heading the Section Result again from Kettering. The most recent Section winner is a 2023 Mealy cock, the Dam of which also bred the 2024 Section winner. The bloodlines are Romein Klein and within the lineage are generations of winners. Grandsire a son of ‘Super Kenny’, which was a prolific winner when paired to a Romein Klein Grizzle Hen bred direct from the noted ‘Quicksilver’. Grand Dam bred from a Dark Chequer cock that was bred from ‘National Wonder’ x ‘Star Boy 02’ when paired to a Blue hen from ‘Super Samantha’, winner of 37 – prizes including 1st 9,912 birds and full sister to a National winner when paired to ‘Blue Star’, brother of ‘New Starlet’ 1st National 39,000 birds. Sire of the recent Section winner was bred by Frank Dixon from Wirral, his Sire from a grandson of ‘The Greipel’. Dam of the Frank Dixon cock is a Herman Ceusters from Ponderosa Stud U.K., son of Olympiade – Diador, a sister to ‘The Wellins Cock’. The Mealy cock that won the Section from Kettering was managed on the Darkness method as a youngster and over subsequent years has been worked celibate, going through the inland programme each year scoring on a number of occasions in the Club and Fed. 2nd Section A, M. Halliday Mervyn Halliday from Penpont, Near Thornhill second section. Mervyn was initially encouraged in the hobby by Raymond Thompson, who was Secretary of the local Club in Thornhill and was influenced also by brothers Albion, Gordon and Jim Russell, with whom he worked. He told me that the ongoing patter at their place of work was ‘pigeons’ and before long he was involved in the friendly conversation. Encouraged and assisted by the fanciers mentioned, he entered the fancy in the late 1970’s, joining Thornhill Club. Whilst subsequently working away from home, he parted with his pigeons retaining an interest in our hobby by entering partnership with Albion and Mary Russell under the loft title A and M Russell and Halliday. At that time he purchased a number of Jan Aardens from LPW, closely related to named pigeons, including a son and daughter of ‘Invincible Spirit’. When the successful Skachill and McCormack partnership entered the fancy Albion gifted them several youngsters containing the Jan Aarden lines with an extra special pigeon emerging named ‘Abbey Lass’ that won out of turn with the highlight being winning the Gold Cup race from Alencon in 2014. Sire was indeed one of the Jan Aarden’s bred by Albion Russell that contained the lines of ‘Invincible Spirit. When Mervyn finished work he re-entered the fancy in his own name. He initially worked with local stock and examples of the Jan Aaeden’s and then purchased quality bloodlines from a leading Stud for stock. The bird that was 2nd Section Kettering is a two year old Red Cock that was unraced as a youngster as it habitually sat-out when put in a basket, giving an impression it had a stopping-place. As a yearling it again was not performing to Mervyn’s satisfaction on the road and was ‘put-by’ for the remainder of the season. In 2026 it was paired at the end of February, reared a pair of youngsters in its first nest and single reared another youngster in the second nest. It went to every race in the programme and was in the clock each time he was away. His mate was unfortunately taken by a BOP three weeks before the National, he took on with another hen and was calling her to the nest on basketing. Sire contains the original Jan Aarden lines with the Dam being a Roland Janssen Grizzle, which Mervyn obtained from Albion and Mary Russell. 3rd section A, R. Campbell Ryan Campbell from Langholm is 3rd South Section. Ryan developed an interest in the pigeon hobby as a schoolboy at Canonbie and when nine years old became a member of Langholm Club in partnership with his grandfather, Bill Evans. The years moved forward and through his work he resided at different locations but retained and interest in the hobby being for a time a member of Dumfries Flying Club and Lockerbie Club. In recent years, he moved residence once again to Langholm and became a member of the local Club. Old birds are managed on the Natural system with Young Birds being worked in the conventional method. The winning pigeon from Kettering is a 2023 Blue cock that was latebred and unraced as a youngster. To compensate for the fact it had been unraced in its maiden season, Ryan basket trained the young cock during the winter, taking it with him to his work at Dumfries several times a week without consideration for the weather, the driving distance from his home to his work incidentally, being circa 35 miles. He went through the Federation programme as a yearling and at the gateway to the 2024 season bred a youngster that was 14th in the 2024 Shropshire Final One Loft Race. In 2025 it again went through the programme, scoring several times including gaining a 1st Club and featuring in the Federation Result. In 2026 it was paired the week before the Blackpool Show and bred two youngsters. Worked Natural it went through the Federation Programme, scoring several times including 4th Federation from Charnock Richard. His mate was actually lost three weeks before the National but he quickly took on with another hen and went to Kettering covering eggs. In 2025 Ryan won the Section from the Y.B. National with a Slatey Blue Chequer Cock the Sire of which was bred from a latebred cock obtained from John Smart that contains the lines of ‘Crosshill Ace’. The 3rd Section Kettering contains similar lines being a great grandsire of ‘Crosshill Ace’. Dam is a Lambrecht, which Ryan obtained from Alan Mortimer from Elgin. Section B 1st Section B, A. Miller Andy was first section and ninth open flying 266 miles. Last season it was sixth section and 14th open Ypres flying 434 miles. Grandsire and granddam on the sire’s side is Hereman Ceusters via Premier Stud. The dam’s side is Harry bloodlines via Syndicate Lofts. 2nd Section B, W. Pryde and Son The partnerships cheq cock was a 2024 latebred which was lightly raced in 2025 out to Newark. This race she was first in her club, second federation. The sire was a gift from Dougie Barnes. Both parents a Syndicate loft pigeon down through Proper Rik and Foxylady. 3rd Section B, F & W Robertson The partnership sent their yearling blue hen, as a young bird she was only sent to the first five races up to 155 miles and stopped. This season the national was her fourth race flown, starting at 117 miles. The blue hen was flown on the roundabout system and has been flying steady so far. Her breeding is full Ceuster, bred from Premier stud stock birds in the loft. Sire being a grandson of Wildwind and the dam daughter of Man-O-Chester. Section C 1st section C, 3rd open, C. Buchanan Colin sent a strong team to the race 31 in total and recorded equally strong results, being 1st, 5th, 17th, 28th and 33rd Section C with open prizes of 3rd, 18th, 222nd and 293rd Open. Colin is relatively new to the sport only commenced racing in 2022 but is making his presence felt. He is a previous winner of 1st Open Central and East of Scotland Amalgamation from Grantham in 2024. The winner is a yearling blue bar cock flown on the roundabout system and was mated up in January this year after Colin returned back from the Blackpoool show. He reared two young birds was then separated and has since been flown on the Roundabout System. The above winner has been a consistent performer always in the top five pigeons home to the Loft. As a young bird 2nd Club Alnwick, 4th Club Darlington and 4th Club Harrogate. As a yearling was 2nd Club Wetherby then 1st Club, 2nd Section 2nd Open Federation Grantham. The Sire of the winner is a Van Den Bulk and was purchased from Performance Pigeons in Cumbernauld and he is a double grandson of Gold Dust best breeding sister of Kittel when paired Banksy and Skittel who are both sons of Kittel. The dam of the winner is a gift bird from Colin's good friends Iain and Dave Maddison of Hartlepool. 2nd and 3rd Section C, E. McWilliams Eddie's first timer was a three year old blue check hen of Koopman breeding through Jackie Traynor. She had been flying celebate all year then mated to another hen, Eddie gave her a bowl and then slipped eggs two days before marking. She had previously won 2nd Club Ackworth. Eddie's second pigeon is a three year old blue bar hen and was gifted to Eddie by clubmate Adrian Simpson. In 2025 she previusly won 1st Club Grantham. This hen has been flown celebate this year. Section D 1st Section D, P. Keogh Peter 1st Section D, 7th Open Blue Hen Su24Ca 655 is home bred from a son off Sinclair Thomson&Sons Mr Consistent winner in 14 Scottish National Races paired to a daughter from Gordon Turnbull's Bronze Award winner who has scored in 7 Nationals. After raising a pair of ybs she was separated and flown on Roundabout through the Federation program before the Kettering Race being very consistent. She flew the Federation program as a youngster and as a Yearling before SNFC Ypres where she homed on the day just out of the he prizes. 2nd Section D, G. Mackenzie Gordon 2nd Section D 11th Open Blue Hen Su24Ca 655 is home bred from a son off Sinclair Thomson & Son’s Mr Consistent winner in 14 Scottish National Races paired to a daughter from Gordon Turnbull's Bronze Award winner who has scored in 7 Nationals. After raising a pair of ybs she was separated and flown on Roundabout through the Federation program before the Kettering Race being very consistent. She flew the Fed program as a youngster and as a Yearling before SNFC Ypres where she homed on the day just out of the he prizes. 3rd Section D, M. Brown Martyn was absolutely delighted with the hen winning 1st club 3rd fed 3rd section 34th open. She is from a Kit of 6 we swapped with Robert Walker last year and we must thank Robert for them as this is the 2nd winner that kit has produced including a federation topper, it’s also worth noting Martyn’s second pigeon from Kettering was also from Robert genuine doos from a genuine doo man. Then hen is raced on roundabout and has had every race this year, for about 10 days on the build up to basketing he had been using her to try get her cock motivated as his form had dipped and he wasn’t interested in racing at all. She had seen him every day, we were that focused on the cock that it never dawned on him that the hen would also be benefitting from the motivation, not until she nearly took the front off the loft on Saturday that is. Well done Peter Keogh winning the section and well done to G Donaghy on the national win . Section E 1st Section E, W. Smith Timed his yearling red cock to win the section and eighth open. He was a gift from good friend Billy Bilsland from his stock birds. Leading up to Kettering the cock had two races with the Lanarkshire Federation from Wetherby and Bubwith the week before the national, in which he was seventh open in the Lanarkshire Federation. He was sent sitting on two day eggs and loft is all natural. Massive thank you to Billy for breeding the pigeon. 2nd Section E, D. Forster and Son The partnership would like to extend their appreciation to everyone who has guided us with our pigeons and to all the endless hard work the different racing organisations provide to let us enjoy this wonderful sport. This being the sixth year racing pigeons. The cheq hen was bred by their good friend John Frood, breeding being a Vanderwagen cock and a Vandornlin hen. As a young bird it was flown to 130 miles and as a yearling to 200 miles. This season she was raced on the roundabout system and given her cock one hour before basketing. She is a very steady hen and never far away. 3rd Section E, J & K Miller Kevin timed his two year old blue cock to take third section. This has been a very steady pigeon this season having three races Wooler, Catterick and Wetherby before going to the national. Last season he was 14th section SNFC Reading. The sire is Van Lint x Lindelauf cross the dam is a Vandenabeele. Section F 1st and 3rd Section F, 1st and 5th open, G. Donaghy The village of Old Kilpatrick sits directly in the shadows of The Erskine Bridge. A magnificent piece of 1960s engineering, spanning the River Clyde connecting West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire. For almost 100 years pigeon lofts have overlooked the village from Railway embankment gardens, where many men and pigeons have tried to realise a dream which became a reality for Gary Donaghy and his brilliant Cheq Hen, sitting two newly hatched YBs, from Scottish National Flying Kettering on Saturday 30th May. An impressive velocity of 1555ypm over 288 miles saw off a field of 3121 pigeons, a further pigeon timed minutes later on a velocity of 1532ypm was recorded to claim 5th Open and top off a remarkable achievement. Gary raced pigeons in his teens and early adulthood before a long break through family and work commitments. As retirement approached 9 years ago, a long awaited return to the sport was made, firstly, to a small loft at his home followed a season later to the Old Kilpatrick allotments. Self built lofts are both spacious and practical with a healthy team in both numbers and condition being housed. Old school methods are employed with Old and Young running together and a diet of beans and peas being available in hoppers. A trapping mix supplements this as and when required. Good honest bloodlines, mostly being of West Scotland origins are housed. Hard work, plenty of training and racing are the keys to success with no fancy fads of theories practiced. An infectious enthusiasm for National racing along with detailed knowledge of his birds, ring numbers, pedigrees, race records and velocities, It is no wonder this loft has put up some terrific performances with the SNRPC and SNFC on the road to the magical 1st Open Spot. Gary mentioned he thinks highly of people who run club, fed and online sales, as well as donators, as it gives the average fancier a chance to obtain top bloodlines at a price that’s affordable. Both Sires of 1st and 5th Open were purchased at the Falkirk ‘Lier Market’ , with the 5th Open Sire being bred by market organiser Scot Russel of Section D. Andrew Suckle of the Coalburn Golden Mile being the breeder of Sire of 1st Open. The Dams sides of both pigeons contains the lines of Jim Hannah, Robert Reid, Jimmy McMillan and the late Alex McInnes. All tried and tested West Section Bloodlines. The future looks bright for Gary and his team and he is yet undecided whether both pigeons will continue racing as he feels ‘there is more racing in them I think’. Gary offers his thanks to all involved at the SNFC and congratulations to all the other winners on the day. I don’t think this is the last time we will see Gary’s name on a National result. Report by JVP Jonesy. 2nd Section F, 2nd open, R. Reid Robert’s three year old blue hen in 2nd Section F 2nd Open SNFC is now named Deansbury Bridesmaid. She went to Kettering for her 3rd race of the season sitting 10 day eggs. She was hawked last year while racing and returned after about 3 weeks. Although she looked to be on form for the Kettering race i had a doubt about her due to her previous injury. Her dam was 5th Open Niort and Ogilvie Trophy winner from 580 miles. Her sire was a dark cock which was lost racing relatively early in his career. This year she showed a behavioural trait which Robert has only ever noticed in herself or her mother. On return from a race the birds initially receive a light feed. Thereafter they have a higher protein mix to boost muscle recovery and towards the weekend the diet focuses more on fats and carbohydrates. Section G 1st Section G, A.J Greig and Milne The partnership timed “Brady’s Boy” named after their ten month old son who is in and out of pigeons at and early age. Ross Milne started a partnership with his father in law Andy Greig in 2019, then as 2020 came around to start the young birds season his wife Julie caught the bug and joined the team. What interested the team to get into pigeon racing, was the long distance racing. With a family of birds combined from different fanciers they met around north of Scotland such as George weatherly, D&C mcdougall etc, their family was made! In 2023 Andy had been researching and studying the Padfield family, so they had bought a kit of six Padfield young birds from Steve and Leslie wright from the house of Aarden to put into their team and to cross into their own family at home. So the bird that won the section G is a Padfield pied cock bred by Steve and Lesley wright from the house of Aarden. Preparation, all the birds are on open hole, from morning to night! Plenty feeding, grit and water and they are happy. Keep them going at the club racing but not push too hard. Fed plenty of redskin peanuts leading up to race. Sitting on chipping eggs. This race was this Padfields first national, and he scored big time 2nd Section G, A.R Rae 2nd G Region Kettering (GB24Z02991 L/Cheq) She was purchased by his wife from Masserlla, She bought a kit of 6 Jan Arden Breed, She is the only bird left of the six. She went to the young bird national, She was my nominator and got her and one of the other six so he was very happy with that. She has been a good racer but not a good trapper, she went away in good condition and I hope to get her again. At the moment Alec doesn’t have anything to do with my birds due to my hip operation, so gives special thanks to my wife and granddaughter for taking good care of hispigeons. 3rd Section G, C. McRae Firstly, well done to Greig & Milne on their section win and to all region ticket winners. This was his first SNFC race for probably ten years but have plans to become a regular competitor. My pigeon, known to me as The 51, is a yearling cock flown on a celibate system. He’s been a middle of the pack pigeon during club racing so far but had the genes to achieve more. His G.Sire, a Hardy Kruger, topped the Fed at 370ml, then 460ml two weeks later, as a yearling. He was also 4th Fed 460ml as 2y. His G.Dam, a Herman’s Cuesters was also a Fed winning and consistent racer. The Dam of The 51 is a Wilam De Bruijn bred by Clive Lister from York. These birds have done well for him pure and crossed. Thanks Clive. The 51 is bound for Brighton, along with a few of his colleagues. Good luck to all in your next race. Congratulations to national winner G. Donaghy and all the other section winners. Massive thank you to all the committee members that provided me with the information for the report. Special thank you to President Michael Currie and Billy Wortley for section A, Freddie Robertson for Section B, Keith Cochrane section C, Scot Russell section D, John Lawrie section E, Alan Jones, John Diamond and Barry Nicol section F. Reminder to all fanciers to have a note of your SNFC official number when you attend clock checking as this number is needed so the national committee officials can write number on your clock sheet. Thank you and happy racing! Mary Thomson SNFC PRO
