hawked again Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 in pigeon racing what north is used Magnetic or they would use maps or charts. I think a lot of mine use nothing and just stay at the Lib site. Sometimes come home with blisters on their feet. LOL
Guest bigda Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 (edited) we all know where we are using magnetic north but the mention of true north can be used to fox people, but if the country in moving 1/2 in four years distance must change for some i believe they use some other navagation skill in airports as the go by true north Edited November 22, 2014 by bigda

If a runway was pointing 87 degrees it would be rounded to 90, so the other end would be rounded to 270. It would then be given the name 09/27 and be classed as running East/west. Because they are rounded to the nearest 10 degrees it takes years before their names change.
Upsndoons Posted November 22, 2014 Report Posted November 22, 2014 There are three Norths commonly in use in Great Britain. Grid North the direction of a grid line which is parallel to the central meridian on the National Grid. True North is the direction of a meridian of longitude which converges on the North Pole. Magnetic North is the direction indicated by a magnetic compass. Magnetic North moves slowly with a variable rate and currently is west of Grid North in Great Britain The true north is the point in the northern hemisphere about which the plant rotates. Also known as the north pole. Most aircraft in the world now use global positioning systems which are referenced to global co-ordinates and are highly accurate. The thing to realise is the earths magnetism field varies each year be a small amount when referenced to true north. All professional pilots need to understand what is called variation since every aircraft has a magnetic compass in the cockpit should all other systems fail.(Highly, highly UNLIKELY.) Your loft position is referenced to the global navigation position system and this is constant regardless of planetary magnetic variation. Above is small sample of commercial pilot training. Now, how to get my birds to understand all this............... cheers

So nothing to worry about, north will always ne north.

There's nearly 18 of them in a degree and mine only have 4 toes on each foot for counting. I think mag bearings are converted to grid and not true. Mag to grid get rid, grid to mag add. Well seen I can't be bothered with that jungle sh@t that's on the telly just now.
