i think it may be more down to mother nature that the cock drives not that the cock really knows what hes doing apart from trying to get the hen back to nest

IMO hens that go through the natural breeding cycle don't need anything else other than grit, after all they've being doing that since the year dot. Taking eggs away and letting them go down again is another story.

 

Giving grit to prisoners even if given supplements is good for their wellbeing.
