Has anyone replaced the handle on one of them? Been looking at it but don't want to make a mess of it as there doesn't appear to be an easy way of getting it off?

yes it is quite easy just like a button hole get a good bit of leather and just copy drill small hole at both ends then use drill fine bit to slide down to make slit 1/16th bit 5/8th slot then wet it to soften job done
