Bluepied80 Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Cheers guys this is all new to me when you say inbred family what breeds are these (sorry if I'm coming across a bit stupid lol)
walterboswell59 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 an inbred bird is a bird bred from say father and daughter half brother to half sister grandsire to granddaughter so inbred back to the best pigeons in the family is best i can explain it to you thus retaining lots of the best winning gennes from that family louella breed there birds this way and the jan aarden family would be a good cross for you i think hope this helps you
Bluepied80 Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Cheers walterboswell59 that make sense now lol
OLDYELLOW Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 go find a top bird at the distance you require and try getting ybs from it
jakie Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 hi mate, forget about strain or breed names and concentrate on performance, strain names are only a label on a bottle, its whats inside the bottle that counts, thats why the pedigree or history of the pigeon is so important, keep your eyes wide open and remember that building a family of pigeons that clock regular from 500 miles may take you 30 years, you will need patience and of course bottle.good luck mate
Guest Owen Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 The idea that pigeons are split into breeds like many other animals and birds is totally wrong for all sorts of reasons. The most successful way to breed winning pigeons is by using single factor genetics. To do that you have to decide what sort of events you want to target and concentrate on those. Ideally you should concentrate on sprint, middle or long distance events. After that it becomes easy because you test all your birds and select the ones that are best at your chosen event. The disciple is that you must never breed from untried birds and every bird has to be tested.Obviously to make this idea work as it should you need to have a loft designed for pigeons rather than people and you need to train the birds properly. It is also important to feed the birds correctly and have a them on a healthy regime to ensure that they are able to reach their best physical condition.Single factor genetics is widely used in the livestock industry and is very easy to use and understand. The selection of your breeding stock is best done on your desk in the house and not at the pigeon loft because the only thing that will matter will be results. You will not need to look at the birds physical make up at all because it will only be performance that counts. In regard to the idea of families of pigeons, you will find that before too long you will create a family of your own. They may start out with the labels of certain families but they will very quickly become tailored to your own methods of selection and ideas on what makes a good racing pigeon based on their ability to win races.
Guest Owen Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 I reckon that a lot of people have been in the position of not having really good birds and need to start somewhere. I know that I was in that position myself and at that time I didn't know where to go for help and advice. I decided that if and when I managed to get myself a good team of winning pigeons I would always try to tell others how to do things and I have. I think the thing that struck me about all this was when two different people decided to call it a day and leave the sport. Both of these people had spent a small fortune on birds but couldn't win with them after literally years of trying. In the end they had enough and packed in. I am sure that both these fanciers would still be in the sport today if they could have won something. As I said earlier pigeon racing can be a very hard sport to be good at and even those of us who have done alright have our disasters from time to time. I have helped a lot of people to get results and I hope I can carry on even on my days off.
