OLDYELLOW Posted July 12, 2013 Author Report Posted July 12, 2013 again best of luck ,been down this road myself settling birds 4 miles from home , only to move again 3 months later .not an easy task OY .No not easy too many options , and not wanting to loose any so far one yearling cock lost , he got out as I opened loft door up and away didn't look around the one that looked around before heading home came back 24 hours later once got a bit of a flock going around will double up the hens Then probably get hens in with cocks and open them up plenty of straw on garden fer nesting material and a bath out plenty of distraction methods and natural behaviour taken in to consideration lol

JohnQuinn Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Unless you're in a hurry Mark, wait for a miserable weather day and try them out about an hour or two before roosting time. If they don't come back in they won't have ventured far either, so get your own doos out as early as possible next morning and hopefully they will pick them up and they'll think better of spending another night on the tiles. Also have them hungry when you let them out, that will have kicked in more too by morning, another incentive for them to return to the loft. I have had many successes using this method to break doos, as did my father before me, who of course i learned it from. Atb John.
OLDYELLOW Posted July 14, 2013 Author Report Posted July 14, 2013 Cheers John , nowt to drag them back with these ybs / old hens aren't doing much flying lol , just upped the game a wee bit have put 4 more hens in tonight hopefully be up to six this time tomorrow or night after
JohnQuinn Posted July 14, 2013 Report Posted July 14, 2013 Am sure ye'l get there Mark, another saying ma old man had was "good doos are easily broken" referring to their intelligence over the not so easily broken ones or those that just disappear right away. So maybe those that don't settle might no have been the cleverest tae start with
OLDYELLOW Posted July 14, 2013 Author Report Posted July 14, 2013 lol I think if they have a good look around before they take off they return only lost one and he got out over me head
OLDYELLOW Posted July 15, 2013 Author Report Posted July 15, 2013 4 more hens were on open loft one flew back to old loft and came back 1 hour later other 2 played around garden and one didn't venture out of loft , been busy decorating and laying a laminate floor in utility room , also had builders in to start new bathroom so not had time to shift some more hens tonight but will shift another 5 tomorrow night . Run to tip tomorrow with loads of rubbish me backs killing now just thinking of it
OLDYELLOW Posted July 24, 2013 Author Report Posted July 24, 2013 had 9 hens settled let 3 more out yesterday 2 more back today so up to 11 hens just one out still aint lost 1 hen yet , I never thought it be this easy
