harky Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Hi I have had my youngins on the darkness and they have went through the body moult ok but have throwen flights, some of them have only 3 to go, will they continue throwing flights or will they start throwing from the start again. I have had youngins on the darkness every year and have never had this problem any opinions are most welcome.
Tony C Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 IMO they'll carry on going through a natural moult. Once they throw the first flight they'll carry on throwing flights, once they hit the 5th/6th flight they'll more than likely go through the body moult again.
Wiley Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Going to be a tough one to answer, how many hours are they on the dark, how old are they and did you use lights when they was in the nest?
yeboah Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Yes they will moult again had the same problem last year not darkened from day one and not enough hours darkness .
harky Posted June 30, 2013 Author Report Posted June 30, 2013 Cheers, there were lights on when being reared , and all were away from nest by end of march, they were put on darkness on 16th April and took of it last week, the hut was darkened down at 7pm and lightened up at 7.15 am due to my working hours.
harky Posted June 30, 2013 Author Report Posted June 30, 2013 Yes they will moult again had the same problem last year not darkened from day one and not enough hours darkness .Do you mean they will start throwing flights again or moult out the flights that have still to be throwen, did you notice any difference in your youngins performance from previos years .
Wiley Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Unfortunately they wasn't on the darkness then, being on 12hrs 15 minutes light, they would moult naturally. You must have at least 30 minutes more darkness for the system to work, 12hrs 30 minutes dark, 11hrs 30 light, they would have gone on the system perfectly. Also 2-3 weeks on natural light from weaning would have done them no favours for the darkness system, if weaning in march and April like us anything that is weaned after 21st March must go straight on the dark. If they have more hours of light then dark it just doesn't work
yeboah Posted June 30, 2013 Report Posted June 30, 2013 Do you mean they will start throwing flights again or moult out the flights that have still to be throwen, did you notice any difference in your youngins performance from previos years .They will finish moulting all main flights and after the5-6th will body moult again forcing them to be stopped never been happy with them as yearlings when they do this ok as 2yo take it easy with what you regard as your best bred they will win later on in life I breed 50-50 now as do many others good luck mick .
