In my opinion depending on the construction of the loft food will need to be increased on cold days, this will stop them using all there energy trying to keep warm at night
Guest snowy2011 Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 But as for feeding to win as they would say do u feed to apatite? Or to ur system? Some system they have food in front of them all the time so they can pick an choose what they want when they want others like to build an apatite during the week but when doing this do u feed the 1 or two spoons regardless or do add more if hungry. But when it is cold it's the fats that keep them warm is that right?
andyyy Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 As much as they can eat offer small amounts at a time an healthy bird won't pack himself
Wiley Posted May 29, 2013 Report Posted May 29, 2013 It's not my system, but one of the best all round flyers I knew, widows had barley infront of them all the time, he would just add the sports mixture morning and night but barley was always there, he was the man to watch from Peterborough to Thurso.

IMO there's to many variables to keep to a regular feeding system (cold weather, a hard race previous week, how much energy they expend exercising, training). By far the easiest way to make sure they're getting what they require is to add a % of barley in their feed, if they eat all plus the barley they're telling you their appetite hasn't been satisfied. I feed them in pots in their boxes but have a try on the loft floor which I hand feed on if they require more. They'll tell you a lot by watching them exercise, if after 15-20 mins they land and remain motionless, preening themselves or drop down onto the ground picking around they've not been fed enough. Carbs heat the body.
