im lucky never experienced one thank GOD,

but i have heard of quite a few people that have.

i have a 12 x 6 loft for my youngsters,

split into 2,1 section 30 pippo boxes, and the other side 30 slanted lift off perches

with 4 v perches along side.

i have a sliding door between the 2 sections, upto now always open.

come and go as they want, around half go into the pippo's,and the others to the perches.

1 always breed 30/35 youngsters every year.

there a happy bunch of youngsters, that are flying upto 1 and a half hours.

that will all stop in abit when i split up the sexes, and start training them.

could it be down to over crowding etc???

thanks for looking

I feel flyaways come about when free ranging YB's are flying back to the loft and they go by it without realising and they just keep on flying, thinking they are headed for home.

Ive had pigeons since 1977 and up till a few years ago never ever had a flyaway ,yes I've heard about it happening , then one morning I let my 18 youngsters out .kept in a 6x6 section , happy going great at night for well over an hour , then one beautiful morn decided to let them out for a fly and get a bath , 8am out ,seen them going great for maybe half an hour , then out of sight , never got/seen a bird till 6pm I ended the night with 6 got one the next morn , got one reported in Alloa north east of me , went for it that night came home after 10mins got another call another same place Alloa , went for it the next night , so ended half back 9/18 no overcrowding healthy happy birds only difference they got out in the morning , happened again two years later only it happened afternoon , lost half of them . Just bad luck I think , if Percy has a go at them they just go and go and go , and most can't find their way back .

I've had one this weekend.Let 30 young ones out Sunday afternoon they were pecking about on the grass when a hawk came from no where. They scattered everywhere. It's Tuesday night now and I've had 16 back.It just makes you feel like packing in,all the time and effort you put in and it gets wiped out in seconds. Seriously thinking off packing in and just getting a few rollers to let out and watch.
