Rock Doves which are original pigeon that all our birds are descended from are usually found on the coastal areas. It would be normal for them to drink water contaminated with sea salt and pick up salty grit from the sea shore. They have a high tolerance to salt. However, I am sure that apart from the salt they get from their grit extra salt would be harmful. Probably the most important ingredients that they have in the wild that is often missed in captivity if calcium and magnesium which in abundance on the beaches where they live. They also have uninterrupted supplies of both fresh air and sunshine which helps them grow strong bones and feathers a point that is often missed by the people who keep their birds in those enclosed lofts.
