I started pigeons as a 13 year old in Weston Super Mare. as all have stories to tell , and the hard ship factor of them days i will not go down that lane , as we move on , and the past is a learning curve, up to the person how he wants to learn ! but yes I had a dog kennel to start with , and moved on from there, My father got intrested and a loft was built, Pigeon racing then was a little different and all had to work hard to get a result, we had our usall top flyers who won the lot , for my real test we joined a club , after being given birds from great fanciers , like Bill Middle national champ , Mo Kingston, Jack Council `sion` king, of course all gone now , but how to train and look after a pigeon no better people than them , People did buy birds but not big money , £50.00 was a fortune for a bird , but in truth Masserallas did really well , !!! after we set the local club a fresh new challenge that we had arrived the exciting times were awaited and race days I could not wait for, yes we won club races and we won Combines and we competed very well in the speciacist clubs as well , but early on it was the National that held the real honour win , every time a National was on the club racing stopped, the National was on and you wanted to win it , on a couple of accassions it was on Cup final day , Tele , Loft Tele Loft, one watching the tele one watching the loft, I had to grow up and do my bit , and work was calling , which is another chapter , also as we all do other un feathered birds came along , I helped Dad in the lofts but so did my Brother Chris , I became self employed went to New Zealand with my new young family , for 3 years , returned , in 77 , work had to come first , which it did , we set about building up my building company to be a good one but still there with Dad helping if needed, 2000 i started up again to help slow me down a bit I suppose but i was bitten because we went to America and saw a ONE LOFT set up , i decided then that I would start one in England . some time around then the Welsh had a a One Loft going , the rest is history of what happened there, the RPRA started one as well, we waited to see how it turned out , and not seeing any real problems we started our own , hoping to sort out the nasty bits and try and bring some enjoyment to the sport ,which we think we did and still are , , not harping on to much , My son has now taken over the running of the firms we built and still are building them up , I am sitting back now , for him to progress! but still there to sort the `fan` out if needed !! `Pigeons to relax in` , We are a progressive family and what ever, it must be right, , From my very first days in pigeons 45 years ago pigeon racing has changed millons of miles away from them days ! the following is MY view and feelings, Pigeon racing has changed with the times, not the birds so much but the people and the way it is , well buying them has changed anyway, people now are making big money from selling them and we all want to have the best bird in the lofts , Now lets say a moden pigeon , let`s say a top Dutch strain bird wins a National , the owner will sell the y/bs from it for the next 5 years , and let`s say a common Heinz 57 bird won a National, nobody would be intrested , name forgotten, bird not noted , move on till a famous strain wins it then I will buy one no matter the cost ? . The reason for the One Loft race is give all a different type of racing with a little money to win as well , when One Loft races first came out it was the new exciting race to be in , no body knew the right or wrong , but believe me there was some big money thrown at it , right or wrong people were hooked , Now the bubble has burst a little, and it is settling down to be worth a go , as in all walks of life there are people out to make money by hook or crook they will try it appears they shoot thereselves in the foot as a few have , In pigeons I believe 90% are good honest pigeon men who only want to race there birds to the best they can , One Loft racing can offer , a true race all birds together trained together and raced together, bird for bird to me is a true test no matter which one Loft you enter it is your choice, if you enter a easy race program then you must accept the flock of birds that arrive and the first bird to trap is the winner. For me i perfer a bit of a Challenge` the birds can do wonder things if taught the right way, it is the stamina that counts, Here we train them from day one that `this is there home` up to the birds to settle down to the way they should be, the predoters are to blame for a lot of the losses of pigeons , i believe the predators can only do damage to a few , but the brain losses are the worst of all , we all lose birds but the predators do the most damage to a flock !! Winning a National or special race is for you to have in your back Garden and for you to enjoy and reap the glory for your self, and so you should the race and the wind factor before the liberation says where the winner can be!! One Loft racing gives you another angle to fly at , most people put there best birds in One Loft races , and the trainning and racing are made exciting as they progress, the birds are taught what is needed from the start and it is up to the birds to perform and stick it out once the racing starts any bird can win the race there is no favorites in here all are wanted to stay and all are equal, As in every thing there is people who revel in One Loft races maybe they can`race club racing ?? Our One loft has many fanciers GLAD we are going as it gives them another interest to watch young and old, Running a One Loft and the racing is a real challenge in its self, much, much, more than domestic pigeon keeping and racing, it run in a total different way , yes the basic husbandry is the same, but the attitude and the training is totaly different, i believe all pigeons can perform given the right make up , it is there constution that saves them and makes them top guns. The running of the One Lofts now is Internet based as most people have computers and can follow every move on a sreen` which is a good thing` , then we have the timing in systems , you can not run a One Loft with out them, but they have there limits and I think time to move on again as really the clocking can be upgraded to super trap the birds and make it safer to use !! Lke all big supermarkets they have to up the old stuff first , then progress a bit later, could be to late then ?The pigeons are trained and raced in the old fasioned way , in crates and and a lorry , and liberated, , but first the birds must have a loft to fly to, our lofts have grown to the demand we think we should offer you and the birds. We funded the building to start the One Loft , we progress the lofts progress, Pigeon racing and keeping has changed with time , and so it should but again the fancier is being targated , prices for stuff , is way out of control, and some of the items to give the birds should not even be sold , RPRA has rules to help you the fancier , they really should be there for the selling side of things as well, Intresting we had some people come round and general talking about cost etc, the biggest one was the ETS side , hoe the prices have jumped up and now fanciers are feeling the pinch , these firms , for years had shows meeting and demosrations all over the UK to sell there products , now you have there product they need some of that out lay back , and now the rings are flying out !!! ? Another thing a little disturbing is the vaccination of the birds , this again is getting out of hand a bit , it is being thrown around by some vets to vaccanate 4/5 times a year , no way, if that is so then the product we are using is not good enough. `4/5 times` ? One loft racing is here let`s keep it here , it is exciting it is hard work and it does have its up and downs but at least you can enjoy it , we are hopfully here for a few years yet to try and give you the best One Loft around , you never know here you may just beat the best around . enjoy your racing it is a cracking sport to be in , if you enjoy it ! We contacted the Olympics with a view of a special race for the 2012 Olympics, to say they were excited is an understatement, what we offered them was a first in pigeons and a first in the Olympics , it would of set the whole world on to the Olympics and into British pigeon racing, `it would have been huge` we had talked to defra about importing birds and we talked to Bristol airport about pigeons coming in from abroad we had them all talking pigeons we were up for the Olympic INSPIRE mark which is what they give you to promote your quest and to show you are an official Olympic trustee , as required by the Olympics we even became a limited company so all was above board and we were in , all was looking good and things just needed ironing out, and the planning was a massive logistic challenge, we were ready for the challenge and we had a massive amount of work to do , we had people in countries ready to spread the word and bang the drum for the Olympic Pigeon race in England, Olympic delegates were excited as the whole of the Olympics would of been connected through computers and pigeons, it was going to bring it to life but we had one stumbling block to get over and it was the RULES not the rpra ones this time but the Olympic rules, as we all know ,well we do now` that the Olympics are not for monetary gain and are for Amateurs and no body can win any money for a race, ( yes we talked about the sponsorship and athletes but they do not get paid for winning !! so we could not have a prize fund, and I don`t think many people would of paid to enter to get nothing, we even went down the Gold medal way, We had proposed to have a school in every country to have pigeons in there name along with pigeons from the fanciers we even had a school in a back town of Zimbabwe ready to go, and all the schools would be connected to computers linking the schools together and they could watch the race and cheer there birds on, the interest was huge from the Olympics , but for one Rule it could not work, people tried different ways and ideas but it was the money side that was the problem. We were tied as it can become LAW and that that is a criminal offence, It was mentioned that if we gave the winnings to charity there may be a way around it, but no there was no way it would work so back to the drawing board` to us what ever is done for the Olympics now it is nothing of what it could have been, you can have a liberation of 30,000 birds and it will be nothing to what we were doing It would have been the biggest thing for pigeons, and the Olympics were really keen as it would of brought the whole world together in 2012 through a pigeon race. That is the bones, we had a 150 page dossier on it . Pigeon racing needs new energetic ideas and to bring it back to life for people to enjoy but there are always rules that do not help. Time to move on. 12th May, 2012 <BR style="FONT-SIZE: 10pt"> " Hi Terry & Jane, Just a quick mail, to say it has been a pleasuremeeting you both again this year.
