Roland Posted December 26, 2008 Author Report Posted December 26, 2008 Of course they never had a decent fighter - outside of Sharpe lol - from Sheffield eh! lol No wonder he's peeved...
Roland Posted December 26, 2008 Author Report Posted December 26, 2008 Saw a article that somewhat suprised me. Nottingham had never produced a 'World Champion' til Carl Froch. Remember great british chams, Swift Pritchard, etc. etc. Dave Needham, but though in recollection i realised they didn't ... found it hard to find one... Some world class, but seems always some world champ that edged them. What square mile has produce more world champion boxers than any other ... suprise suprise, London!

Roland Posted December 27, 2008 Author Report Posted December 27, 2008 Must say though, the best I've seen boxing wise over the last 40 odd years have both been Scots, Joe -'Bring hame ma bacon' Ganns son Walter McGowan and Ken Buchannon. Best Amateur I ever saw fight was Chris Finnigan - when he was Light middlewieght ABA champ out pointing Robert Henderson the Welterwieght Aba champion that year. Now as to was it a contrived match for the 'Crowds' Pleasure' I wasn't aware of then ... nor now, but have to admit these bouts did, and do, go on. But that was sheer Class. Johnny Francome's fight against Willie stack the 'Ole War Horse' - who's sister unfortunately wed Randolth Turpin against the reigning Aba, and England's no 1 / 2 / 3 depending what part of the contry you lived lol, was a great Classic. Willie was 40 sommat, and Francome atill a yoiungster. Sheer class and crowd pleaser.
