Got some young birds that have strange symptons. Droppings seem good, not overly thin, good appetite but sitting a little puffed up and blinking slowly. I assumed it was a touch of cocci do have started treating for that yesterday and giving them as much as they want to eat as well, just thought I would put it out there to see if anything else could be suggested?

If it was a young bird, I'd suspect it hadn't yet found the drinker - slow blink is the giveaway for that.

I'd go on these lines unless there old young birds?

Been weaned for over 10 days so pretty sure it is not that. Going to chek when I feed them tonight that they all get to the drinker OK anyway but pretty confident all is OK on that front.

As you can tell I am rather confused??

keep an eye on their droppings, see if they turn greenish brown....theres loads of it about.

make sure you have some good anti biotic on standby...incase they turn worst.

the blinking could mean a stomach disorder about to happen or just a coincidence.

if they do change ..get a droppings test done and dont hang about for advice off here..although we can help in some way, we are not there to witness if the birds are ill or not.

if the birds have been weaned for 10 days and you know they are drinking then it seems something else is dehidrating them.i would canker them all and see what happens.check the throat is nice and pinkie colour with no white spots slimey saliva, yellow spots or a sort of grey colour on the tonsils.

The birds are all drinking and eating and had a really good feed tonight. The Coxoid is still in the water and it is a 7 day course so going to complete that and then canker them all with Harkers tablets. Turns out se of the droppings have gone a little watery now, just seen a couple tonight. By next weekend they will have all been treated for cocci and canker so that should hopefully sort it all out. I did actually check some of the throats today and can't see any signs of canker but could be early stages. Shall keep checking every day.

Why would you treat for cocci or canker if you do not know what's wrong with them?

I have treated for the cocci as the loft that the young birds are from developed a touch of cocci after I removed the youngsters so wasn't sure if this was the reason. I have also seen that a lots fanciers treat for cocci and canker after the weaning stage anyway so surely it will not do any harm?

Things seem to be improving a little. I have just remebered that I have changed the corn to a new mix just before they started going a little down hill. I am wondering if the new corn is not quite as nutritious and maybe they need a little more of it. It certainly is not as big as the other corn, it features various small peas, dari, safflower, wheat compared to my old mix which had some maize and beans in. I am feeding Bamfords corn.

I was down the club tonight and took a basket down which I cleaned out before placing all 8 of the birds in it today. The droppings that were in there were given the thumbs up by experienced members of the club so I am just going to start feeding them morning and night now instead of just in the morning to try and bump them up a bit and hope that it may have been a bit of underfeeding that was effecting them.

If there were problems with the droppings then that would have actually made my life a lot easier!
