yeboah Posted February 11, 2012 Report Posted February 11, 2012 Ref-Gift Pigeons,Started racing as a lad in 1972 and got my first national ticket in 1974 from the SNFC Avranches race when i timed a blue cock that had been gifted from Kit Rae from Brydekirk still remember standing at the loft with my late mother ,my loft at Wamphray stood 50yds from the main Glasgow to London railway line, when a batch of seven pigeons approached following the railway ,the blue cock dropped to me gaining 144th open from 5000 plus the other six continued for lanarkshire, Next gift youngster my late father and i picked from the nest of my cousin ben scott also from brydekirk it was a late bred and did not race until the yearling stage, the pigeon was a cheq wf hen ,when it was 2yo i entered it from cheltenham on the saturday 236 mls then basketed it on the tuesday for the SNFC gold cup race from Rennes I timed here at 9-23 after flying 15 3/4 hours from 500mls into a nw wind to take 2nd section 11th open gold cup from an entry of 7500 when only 32 made it on the night,by the way it was flying to the perch,(or me )Wish i was gifted birds of that calibre for free now

Guest Owen Posted March 20, 2012 Report Posted March 20, 2012 After I started with pigeons in 1997 I could not win anything so I decided to give birds to local Fanciers so that I would know if the birds were better in the hands of others. It reached the stage when I was the only one not to win with them. Slowley but surely I wised up and I started to win the odd race and after a time I was winning regularly. At no time did anyone offer to breed me a couple of birds when I was learning and up against it. These days I never accept a bird from local Fanciers and I certainly would not offer one. My birds win regularly for the people who have them but these people are always from outside this area.

holmsidelofts Posted March 21, 2012 Report Posted March 21, 2012 HAD THE BIRDS FOR OVER 50 YEARS .MET A LOT OF DOO.MEN .ONE THING I WILL SAY ANY DOO MAN IN YOUR CLUB WILL NOT GIVE YOU A BIRD THAT IS GOING TO BEAT THEIR OWN.A GIFT IS THE BEST SOME TIMES.THE WIFES UNCLE JOHN.HUNTER.R.I.P. FROM CHAPLEHALL GAVE SIX BIRDS .THREE OF BIRDS WIN Ist FOR ME BEST RED COCK YEARLING 1st MAIDSTONE £144. THE FEELING WAS GREAT LETS HERE SOME OF YOUR STORIES. I always amazes me when theres a hard race for instance you ask some fanciers 'how did you get on' they say all home or one away when you know for a fact its not true, I have never understood why people do this. If i loose any i tell people. As for giving you birds from there best i always doubt that as well, true some people want others to win with someone else's birds so that they can see if its fancier or bird that is doing the winning. But no one is going to give away or sell birds out of there best for someone local to race against them with, Thats why i don't think its a good option to go to a local fancier, I would much prefer to pick a good winning fancier miles from me as i know i have more chance of getting something good from him or her than if i was a direct competitor.
