Since going from deep litter,to cleaning out each day.I am finding that some of the birds, mainly cock birds that spend time driving on the floor. Are getting clogs of poo on there feet. The worst two,I have stood in a bucket of worm water, which has cleaned them, but left them with swollen toes, which seem to collect much as soon as they are back in the loft.If anyone has any ideas,I would appreciate them,as I dont want to go back to deep litter. well if there's droppings on the floor there going to get mess on there feet , why are your birds still together can't you split them this would stop the cocks driving , you can either clean twice a day or use some form of deep litter and plenty of baths loft white does help to keep them clean as dropping dry much quicker on contact , if the wood deep litter doesn't suit then sand or fuller earth cat litter is a good alternative :)

I don't think you have bumble foot which is bacterial in nature and damages the toes. This is often seen on feral pigeons.

Hopefully You just have birds with dirty toes and you will find a systen to suit your management to resolve this.

The birds should be keeping their own feet clean by applying some of the same oil they use on their feathers; if you watch them after taking oil from the preen gland, the next thing that usually happens is they use a foot to wipe some from the beak. That oil protects from some pathogens, and they preen their feet after they've done their feathers.

I don't know what pathogen causes Bumble Foot, but I suspect that the infection gets in through cuts & abrasions on the pads on the soles of the birds foot & toes. If you have to wash the birds feet use lukewarm water as if they are inflamed (angry red looking) warm water will just aggravate the condition, while colder water will help reduce swelling. Dab them dry, then apply something like sudacrem or germolene liberally, which will both seal any cuts & abrasions, and start the healing process..

you probably have 2 many birds in the shed 12 birds is enough for a 8x6 loft then in winter once or twice is nearly enough to scrape out providing you sprinkle some sawdust or shavings over the floor and under perches etc then you should see the birds come into show condition providing they are parasite free it really isnt rocket science unless as old yellow says the cocks are driving the hens and tramping through droppings etc if you cant split them up open your loft more they shoulnt drive as much in a colder loft but make sure rain cant blow in o and feed them half mixture half barley per day this should solve your problem good luck.

Thanks for the advice. They are split up,I have five 8x8 sections, with aroun ten birds in each, with access to a bath and avery 24 7.The problem is,these two cocks are chasing the other cock birds around, hence the messy feet.I realise that it is not bumble foot, but it was the only title I could think of.Perhaps I should have put pooy feet. Thanks Deb
