lanarkshire lad Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 hi guys i found a couple of red mite when i was pulling out a few boards in the loft today.whats the best way to get rid?Chlorocarb.
Guest geordiejen Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 apparently they like to hide in nooks and crannys, ive got plenty of them in my loft as its all shiplap.i can get lots of thin ply from work so im going to line the inside of the loft but not sure if it will do any good as they can move around the loft very fast.
Guest ljb107 Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Get some duramitex and spray it everywhere inside, it will get rid of them. Red mites aren't something you want sucking the blood out of your birds. Lloyd
Guest Tooshy Boy Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 GET INTHERE WITH THE BLOW TORCH FIRSTTHAT KILL THEM BUT WEAR A MASK.
OLDYELLOW Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 poultry shield is good as a spray , can also get it in powder form , but blow torch is good
THE FIFER Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 the ordinary household fly spray in all the cracks etc moves everything out,
yeboah Posted October 2, 2011 Report Posted October 2, 2011 Sure the name of the spray is permethrin?? get it at any farming outlet remove birds from section prior to spraying and let it dry out before returning birds,or let birds bath in a watered down solution of ivermectin sheep drench then qauranteed nothing will live on them or in them .

Guest geordiejen Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 my birds get vinegar n there bath never had a lice or red mite sice started doing this bt still give ma loft a spray about this time of yearhi mate i dint know i had red mite either until i took off a few boards.apparently they come out at night when the birds are roosting.i thought the one drop would see to that but apparently not.
THE FIFER Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 some good strong garlic water in the bath water
Guest IB Posted October 3, 2011 Report Posted October 3, 2011 I think red mite is a loft problem, as the mite don't live on the bird, they only come out from hiding at night to go on the birds to feed, then go back into hiding in nooks and crannies to digest their blood meals during the day. Original Duramitex loft treatment isn't made anymore, but Harker's have a replacement product which they claim is safer all round to use on the loft. Also I wouldn't be panelling anything off, that's just encouraging vermin, and basic walls are a lot easier to spray, and these pests would have fewer places to hide.
