W.D. Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 Hi there, would like some advice please? Birds came back from channel race 2 weeks ago and started picking at themselves.Sprayed loft and dusted bowls, sprayed birds wings too, but didn't seem to work. Had some of Harkers One Spot, did this on O/B(as not so strong) and Ivermectin on Y/B.(they were ok but didn't want them starting too) That was over a week ago, did them with Ivermectin yesterday as some still seem to be picking at area around neck and top of wings, where quill base is.There is one last channel race left,do you think it would be alright to race them if clean or should I forget it to next year?Any advice would be helpful? Cheers, W.D.
bewted Posted July 22, 2011 Report Posted July 22, 2011 only you know your birds better than anyone,,,,,,if your in doubt,,,,then forget it until next year,no use chucking birds away,if,theres a small doubt something might be wrong !
just ask me Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 ivermectin kills most mites etc on feathers they should be ok that way
Guest Hjaltland Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 I would strongly advise against giving Ivermectin while you are still racing. It works well against mites as Just Ask Me has said, but the ivermectin will certainly affect the birds, there must be someone online who could advise on side affects? but my gut feeling , having used Ivermectin in other walks of life, is that it may make the birds a bit dopey for a time - http://www.medicinenet.com/ivermectin-oral/article.htm
just ask me Posted July 23, 2011 Report Posted July 23, 2011 as far as i know its ok to race them after treatment

Cheers, W.D. It might not be parasites causing this behaviour, it could be moulting that causes them to groom themselves.
