The engineer Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 Hi AllI have finally finished the loft. I now have 4 young birds in it. Any advise on when to let them out only got them yesterday 2 are slightly older than the other 2 and are starting to flap around in the section. They can make it upto the first sets of boxes.Should i wait until they recognise me and realise i am the one that feeds them. They are eating but don't seem overly bothered at the moment all 4 have drunk. I am hoping to get another 12 or so in the next week - 10 days. My plan is to race these young birds this year then breed of what is left next year. All the ones coming are all well bred should i be bothered about strains as i am getting quite a mix at the moment.Yours in sport
Wiley Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 I would give them 2 days to settle and then i would get them out as often as possible, once a day is enough. Generally the first day any new birds into a loft very rarely eat for the first day. DO NOT AND I MUST STRESS DO NOT WORRY ABOUT STRAINS!! Van Loon, Janssen, Meaulamen, De Klak, Hofken, Vandenbeele, Sherlackens ect never worried about strains and you'll find alot of the Belgians and Dutch show no interest in strains, just pigeons from winning lines is what you need, they could be from any strains.
OLDYELLOW Posted April 15, 2011 Report Posted April 15, 2011 A Sputnik type trap is ideal to get your young birds looking out so can see there surroundings , then much easier when coming to let them out , my advise would be to leave loft door open fer last hour on a night less chance of bop attacks and birds will explore and wander and will be easier to get in as dusk approaches . As for strains don't worry about them , two types of pigeons good uns and bad uns , however it all depends what your racing goals are . I would of advised to get some sprint based birds , and raced these for a few years to get an idea how to go on . All the best for racing

All the best for racing on the front of the lofts has a box with wire mesh so the birds can sit in it and have a good look around. I seem to be getting both long distance and sprinters at the moment. I have Van Winkels,Soonjtens i am getting Van Loons and for the distance Van Reils and Busschearts so quite a mix that was concerning me slighlty however as you say i should not be worrying about strains. All the pigeons have very good bloodlines with them all doing well in the local area. They have been kindly gifted by fanciers to give me a good start. So fingers crossed.
