Yes they do hate loud noises, I find a blast from the trusty old 12Bore does the trick

Get yourself a Starter pistol that fires blanks,get them from most gun shops,used for training dogs to the gun,there are two types of blanks,long and short,the long ones are the loudest.If the hawk is near when you fire the gun it will be doing sumersalts and clear of quickly.I,ve had one for years,always at hand when the birds are out.
