lvlasked Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 how long should my birds be flying for as they only just been broken in ?
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 how long should my birds be flying for as they only just been broken in ? If they're just broken it could be tricky.Obviously you don't want them roofing but if you are throwing stuff at them it'll be as if you are driving them away.Have they been locked in for a while?obviously it'll take them a wee while before they are back in the swing of flying again. If they're healthy and getting out regularly they should start flying for longer as they get progressively fitter.
lvlasked Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 had them locked up for 3months to try break them in and they been out for about 4days but if i let them out the loft they just sit in the garden and the roof for the hour i allow them out for but if i put them in the basket and let them out they fly around the houe for 10-15mins :S
OLDYELLOW Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 water bombing newly broke pigeons might not be the best of ideas they might decide to bomb back to where they last felt safe at the old home , you should be asking yourself questions to why there not exercising (1) perhaps there gaining there surroundings at there new home and getting use to where there home is(2) Are they too fat ???(3) are you feeding too much ???(4) are you feeding too little ??(5) was it windy ??? was the wind north or north easterly and what was the temperature ????Above are a few examples , I was told to think like a pigeon , find what makes them tick and your half way there , the rest is common sense
lvlasked Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 they only get fed once aday and thats after they go out and they get all the can eat for about 5mins why i clean the drink and put fresh water in and i didnt see the tress blowing today and could feel much wind and was blue skys over me house it was there longest flight today at 15-20 long maybe give me tips on the feeding if im doing it wrong ?
OLDYELLOW Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 your better feeding twice a day , get yourself a routeen and stick to it , then your birds will know what's happening and when . Wind fer me was northerly and bitterly cold if you've got yearlings they like temp 10 degrees or above , heres a tip if you've got a gadget bar install weatherbug it shows wind and temperature .
Guest IB Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 IMO your broken pigeons need a wee bit of rope just now, until they get properly settled in, and get their bearings, see the surrounding area (a rooftop view is great for that) - just make sure that your YBs don't get out at the same time as you don't want them picking up bad habits. Give them a couple of weeks, then if they don't come down when called, lob a brightly coloured soft rubber ball up on the roof. Soon get the message, and after a couple of days they'll lift off the roof as soon as they see you coming with that ball in your hand.
lvlasked Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 how much should i feed in the morning and night then ?
Rooster J. Cogburn Posted March 20, 2011 Report Posted March 20, 2011 Your maybe worrying over nothing. If they are visibly healthy?? they most probably are healthy. Think of it in human terms. If you were locked in your room for three months then expected to run for an hour within the first four days of being let out could you do it??
lvlasked Posted March 20, 2011 Author Report Posted March 20, 2011 i dunno but i dont leave the house apart from sundays for an hour of footie but i see what you getting at haha
