Guest snowy2011 Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 Iv had my pidgeons for over a year now but they didnt race last year will i have a disadvantage racing them as yearlings as they havnt had any race experiance is there anything i can do to boost there experiance at all?
OLDYELLOW Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 Welcome to Pigeon Basics we hope you enjoy our site, yes you will be disadvantaged if your birds haven't been trained in the year of birth , I would wait fer temps above 10 degrees to get them flying well around home and treat them like young birds training 3 x 5 miles 3 x 10 miles 3 x 15 miles 3 x 20 miles 3 x 30 miles , if have a bad training toss return them to a previous shorter toss to get there confidence back , after this training there ready to race good luck

Guest spin cycle Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 i often don't fly ybs...leave them 'til may, then train and race from mid may then put them away. i've often despaired of my birds as yearlings only for them to perform well as 2 year olds
gulkie Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 welcome snowy I don't think you are at a disadvantagethere are lots of fanciers that don't race yb. but make sure you train them well say from the end of marchand stop them at the 200 mile mark.
novo10 Posted February 20, 2011 Report Posted February 20, 2011 welcome snowy 2011 to cold end of march wait to temps up train as if young birds and stop at 200 miles

Rooster J. Cogburn Posted February 21, 2011 Report Posted February 21, 2011 One of my best yearlings in 2010 wasn't in a race basket as a youngster. He was treated in the same way as the rest of the team last year and in his first ever race(Coldstream-60miles)he came in the first drop and was our 2nd pigeon timed finishing 2nd club.8 weeks later from Maidstone(380miles)he was 1st club he was never far away in the 6 races he had between Coldstream and Maidstone either. We had always sent most of youngsters if fit and in feather the full YB programme but not so sure anymore that its essential. Each to their own though
