Spare Hens

Hi all,

I've paired my pigeons but had several extra hens some of which have been 'used elsewhere'. I did retain one however for good reason but I only have a couple of sections so I'm wondering what to do with this extra hen.. Should it be left in with the racers where it might cause stress and disruption or should I put in with the stock pairs? What dose anyone else do?

I wouldn't put it with the stock m8 it will take up with a cock and could cause problems,

2 would be better, as they will pair up and race to each other; 1 will cause disruption as it will follow any cock that shows up to it - and that will be every cock in the loft - back to its box, and generally cause mayhem. If you have a YB end, that's the safest place for her, she will need to exercise, and that too is another problem.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I think its time to make that difficult decision over this, one rank hen can cause so much mayhem.. as in all walks of life I guess... :emoticon-0127-lipssealed::emoticon-0136-giggle:

The pairings have settled well barring one hyper two yearold which should have hed more sense.

If youngbirds havn't got enough brain to find feeder, drinker and way back into loft having to follow others will they have the brain to race?

some good tips there ,me i would put in the yb sec then later split a pair

and pair the cock to the spare hen and race the two hens to the one cock.

FAILING THAT BIN IT.

Race it from the yb end and show it any cock on a friday nite nae diffo tae widowhood. Why bin when it might win?

Like havin an old hen in the yb end when the ybs are aboot on the wing cos it keeps them close tae the loft in the first few flights.

Hens are well known for 'pairing' with their owners. A paired hen that has lost her cock will defend her box (that she reared her youngsters in) just as good as any cock.

A spare hen is a bit different and needs to be apart from the rest, but she's another racer if you can get her going. But be prepared for problems if she arrives home from the race with another cock. :emoticon-0179-headbang:
