sapper756 Posted December 18, 2008 Report Posted December 18, 2008 BBC: "Users of the world's most common web browser have been advised to switch to a rival until a serious security flaw has been fixed." http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7784908.stm I recommend: Firefox - http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/Google Chrome - http://www.google.com/chromeOpera - http://www.opera.com/ just thought I,d raise this thread again for those who may have missed it

Webmaster Posted December 23, 2008 Author Report Posted December 23, 2008 richard it looks to me that this is more to do with the sec of web sites rather than personal pc,s now iam no comp. expert and that is why i need to know for sure before trying to change it ive mucked my comp. for less than this all advice most welcome Yes it is malicious websites that take advantage of a bug in the Internet Explorer web browser. It would only be a problem if you visited one of these 'malicious' sites, but there again there is no sure way of telling if a site is malicious or not :-/ What about emails :-/ Emails are a different kettle of fish. You're probably safest using something like Gmail, Yahoo Mail or Hotmail, because they have anti-virus checkers built in, and actually wont let you download a file if they have detected it to being a virus. If you want an email client on your machine I'd recommend Thunderbird - its made by the same people as Firefox.
frank-123 Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 i use thunderbird no problems with my email

Guest Posted December 23, 2008 Report Posted December 23, 2008 I would not ditch explorer. The other browsers have many more security issues. I have my machine set to recieve automatic updates for windows and office and Mcafee the same. I also at the end of every night go to tools and delete browsing history, then run disk clean up and finaly on Mcafee I run Mcafee quick clean which tends to wipe up the dodgy bits that may be lurking that explorer has missed . Once a week I run a scan, defrag and do a full back up (though after the first this doesn't take long). It's a bit like the birds to stay secure on line you have to do a little bit of work on your machine. Each evening at the end of play it takes 5 minutes. The scan can be run and you can still use the internet, defrag and back ups tend to be down time periods but just leave it running when you have no intention of using your machine. All this can never guarantee a secure machine the same can be said of excellent managementwith the birds but you have a much better chance and your machine will perform at its best.
