Im looking for a new laptop and broadband connection due to moving to Sheffield at the end of September. Could anyone reccomend a good laptop and their broadband connection please? Im looking to spend around £300-£350. I know you can get free laptops with broadband, but that is £30 a month for 24 months, so im thinking about buying them separately.

Many thanks

Josh

Josh I haven't got one but I know several medical students who have used acer laptops and they say they are better than the 'normal' brand name, my son's primary also has them and they like them very much. I have a Toshiba equium which I use all the time and I have ben pleased with and have had only one problem, having to have a new charger plug. The only issue is with the operating system, it generaly comes pre loaded with a recovery disc. I recently went to install an update on .net framework, it failed and corrupted my operating system. I was on the phone to microsoft for 6 hours the other day and they could not fix. I was fortunate they tried to help because I have one care on my machine. However in the end they told me as I did not have a proper copy of vista (pre installed) they could help no further and I would have to do a complete reinstall!! I would make sure you coost in an external disc to create regular backups on, if you are going to hold important data

As to broadband in the past 12 years at home  I have used quite a few and have come back to BT. You can get cheaper but the way I've come around to it, is that when you have a problem with your broadband all the ISP at the end of the day have to go to BT which supplies them! Slightly different for me in that I'm out in the sticks and about 17 mile from the exchange, had huge problems until I went back to BT. I have a wireless connection and the new hub is excellent. I rarely lost connection with the old one but the new N technology has been 100%.

Hope that is of some help

There's nothing wrong with the laptops you can buy in Tesco's for about £300. I bought a HP for my mother who lives in Spain and she's not had any problems with it and it runs like a dream.  Some of the older models will also come with the recovery discs which is what people should look for.  Being up to date is all well and good but in truth most people don't ever use their laptops to the full capability.  As for broadband, isn't Kingston Communications the main player in Sheffield, they are probably the ones to go with and offer the best service.  BT are cheap as chips but thier indian call centers are a nightmare if you get downtime.  Always best to go for a provider that has British call centers who understand what your saying.   :o

That's why I suggested Acer you get more for your money. As to Indian call centres well makes no difference to me, like all at the end of the phone you get some good you get some bad. Jamie Kingston are the telephone people in Hull. Hull had its own private telephone network and they are now branching out.

I have had nothing but trouble with BT Alun, the Indian call centers only know how to ask you if your computer is plugged in and trust me, if you ever have a problem, and I hope you don't you'll see what I mean.   :o :o   Nothing about where they are its about what they know and the fact they can't understand British accents.  :'(   Just done a check on Kingston as I knew it was up that way http://www.eclipse.net.uk/marketing/residential/broadband-and-internet/home-broadband/index.cfm   They do cover sheffield and from what mates up there tell me they aren't too bad.

So many choices these days.   :)

Josh go to your nearest Carephone warehouse o2 were doing a deal around 2 months ago where if you took there connection you got a laptop free. Im not sure what deals they are doing now as i was in there to pick my phone up after repair but im sure you will get a deal with one of the networks if not try Sky broadband as they always have good deals on to mate.

Was in Curry's last week they had some nice Laptops, £499 but free if signed up for Broadband at £40 per month, for 12 months, so for £480 a nice laptop and free BB for a year!

I don't like Acer - have had two and they both packed in after about two years - the motherboard burnt out. :-/

I am with Plusnet - £20 pm inclusive of anytime phonecalls and 300 hours international calls.
