The BHW today carries a series of letters between a welsh fancier ,an MP and the Welsh Assembly Government.Twice in this correspondense the claim is made that the SHU has been successful in persuading the Scottish Government to pass laws to ptotect pigeons from the raptor population.THIS IS NEWS TO ME.

I can only assume that what is being referred to is the facility to apply to the local authority for a license to control a sparrow hawk around a pigeon loft.My question is this:does anyone know of a single instance wher this legislation has been successfully used.

Hi Walter i believe the sparrowhawk was only allowed to be captured and re-released out of its

breeding season which was of no benefit to anyone, never heard of any being caught but heard from

a good source that they would have been released at little Clyde where they are presently erecting the wind turbines just up the road from us ,as if we have not already got our share.

I think a good idea would be if at club agm's a rota system was put into place for each club member

to phone there local mp at different times of the day and keep this up for weeks ,if this were to

happen they would get pig sick of us and it would then become a talking point between them when

they meet up at house of commons,if this were to be carried out by every club the length and breadth of the country perhaps they would start to take notice, all this could be done from the comfort of our homes.

I haven't seen the BHW piece, but I think Walter is right that there has been no change in the law ... you are normally not allowed to trap sparrowhawks, without a special license.

SHU did secure agreement to run a research project involving the trapping & re-location of sparrowhawks - it was this project that was held outside the sparrowhawk breeding season - on MSPs 'request'.

I think SHU was to progress issue of licences, but since the project ended there has been a change in Minister at Holyrood. I'm not sure what has happened since.
