Guest Denny Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 Is there any real difference in which design is used for a pigeon loft, whether it is a pent design or an apex? Are the any pro's or cons using one over the other or is it just down to personal preference?
bird man of meath Posted February 2, 2009 Report Posted February 2, 2009 have apex but cant see birds at the back have to stand on wall
Guest chrisss Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 both of my sheds are apex and i hate [and will change] both of them, i cannot see the birds on the back and cannot see any cats,on the plus side i think the ventilation is better in a apex roof[to me anyway]
Guest strapper Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 ive just bought a newish 16ft x 8ft loft under 12month old for £600 with nestboxes fitted throughout. this has a sloping roof to the back but i will be either altering the roof to slope to the front or...make a fence on the back to stop any cats jumping onto the back of it...but then again...ive already got a defence against cats in next doors garden...a large dog that has already polished off two cats in 2008.
The Navigator Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Personal Preference--- I like a flat roof sloping to the front. Enjoy watching the birds doing whatever they do chasing mates around on the roof. Agree. Also good view of potential cats etc.
Guest Owen Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 I have an apex roof made of sheet steel (box section). It is constructed with a high apex and therefore steep slopes. I have an air gap of about four inches running the whole length of the top, either side. I find it ideal because it is always dry and trouble free. But the best thing is that the birds can not land on it. They slide off. They used to land on the top of the apex but I fixed that by stringing a light rope accross so that I can pull it to remove any bird that tries to land there. If I decide to build another loft in future I will definately use this idea. The only critism could be, is that it is much higher than a pent roof and has a higher visual profile in the garden.
Roland Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Personal Preference--- I like a flat roof sloping to the front. Enjoy watching the birds doing whatever they do chasing mates around on the roof. Me too ... Also like the ability to be able to see exactly what is on my loft ... especially things like Cats etc. that shouldn't be.
Guest anto Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 i also prefere a flat roof sloped 2 the front it suits my loft its 3 foot of the ground never have any problems with dampness find it a lot warmer this time of year 6 ins vents all way round front and back at the top have small loft this year 4 young anto with tiled roof its like a fridge think ill change it all ready might just give it a go and see how the young get on in it
Guest Denny Posted February 3, 2009 Report Posted February 3, 2009 Pent sloping to the front seems to be the general preference. But how do you control the ventilation do you still insert grills at the top just underneath the roof = all round or just to the front?
Guest strapper Posted February 8, 2009 Report Posted February 8, 2009 heres a similar loft ive just bought , i mentioned in earlier post...the glass in the windows is different in mine.16ft x 8ft i had it cheap £600. this loft shown is longer.
