Guest m.bollington Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 hi guys just wondering what is the best thing to feed your birds on during breeding season for big healthy youngsters and is there anything special people put in the food or in the water that will be really good for the young birds cheers martin
OLDYELLOW Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 during breeding i give live natural yoghurt via the water plenty of grit and pickstones and vitamins , if race birds better to feed a good high protein mixture , some lofts feed tic beans and nothing else , but i believe this is more detrimental to the old birds feeding , i feel a good mix with a bit of added linseed and if wish to add more protein, then add protein pellets as long as have no antibiotics will breed healthy robust ybs
kirky Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 mostly as above, i feed a breed and wean mix also bos pellets and it is in front on them all the time, i dont put anything in the water,
Guest mick bowler Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 The key to strong healthy YB is feed as often as you can, and always make sure there plenty of feed towards roosting as that is when the parents will take their food for themselves.

Guest m.bollington Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 cheers guys this will help me out more towards breeding it's pritty much what i was gonna do but thats a good idea with the natural yoghurt what does that do for the young birds is it for the immune system and how much do you add to the water also sum1 told me about baby milk powder in the water does anybody use this and does it make a big difference with the yb's cheers
OLDYELLOW Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 natural yoghurt promotes friendly bacteria in the gut also rich in calcium , baby milk probably another source of calcium and added vitamins but i prefer the yoghurt
Wiley Posted October 21, 2010 Report Posted October 21, 2010 The key to strong healthy YB is feed as often as you can, and always make sure there plenty of feed towards roosting as that is when the parents will take their food for themselves. I agree with Micks post, myself personally i like to offer my birds a good variation of grains when breeding, and allow the birds to take what they like. Typically during breeding ill feed my birds 3-4 times a day, and they may receive 3 different breeding mixtures. I am a big fan of colostrum, and that would be on the corn every single day from hatching. They will also receive peanuts and homoform which they relish, as well as the usual grits. Breeding is the most important time of the year as it builds your foundations for the future, so i do my best to give the young birds the best start in life, and build a bond with them in the nest
Guest mick bowler Posted October 21, 2010 Report Posted October 21, 2010 This is just my opinion, but i dont think collostrum or baby milk powder is any benefit to YBs once they start to feather. I also used to use stuff (multivits etc) in the water, but i dont waste my money anymore, and when using homoform make sure it has not gone off otherwise it will do more harm than good. I fed Gem breeding+ this time, a bit dusty (due to pellets) but i found the YBs thrived on it. I also always have a pot of food in the nest box, this helps the YBs pick up earlier and once they do they come on leaps and bounds. If the pot doesnt get emptied every day you can bank your life there a problem with the YBs. The only other thing they get is matrix and what i call my "special mix", made up of sunflower seeds, crushed peanuts, budgie seed and mixed together with gemthepax (sets hard), birds love it!
