Guest Pearse Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 can anyone explain this to me what it means with the numbers 0-9 ?
gulkie Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 I think you will find the mark is out of 10
Guest Owen Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 Why not test your birds by flying them and breed from the ones that do their best for you. Like most people I have looked at eyesign, wing theory, and just about anything else that was suposed to grade my birds. Although I should have known better, I wasted good time on these theories until I wised up. Any Geneticist will tell you that you should select for the factor that you want to emphasis in what ever livestock you want to breed. You should select for as few factors as you can. Breeding racing pigeons has only one factor worthy of note, winning performances. Not colour, shape, the size of their toes, the shape of their tonsils, just ability racing. Selection should be consistant and constantly taking you in the one direction. And, on no account should you breed from individuals that can not do the job you want from them. I am certain that when a Fancier remains true to his progress in the chosen direction he will not only achieve what he set out to do but create real depth in the team. I think that there are many theories and pit falls lieing in wait for us all because we all want to find the short cuts to the top, but in the end the task is to find the best birds possible and let them do what they will do if they have the right bloodline. Win. Then our job is to manage them so that they can perform to their best potential.
Fly_caster Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 can anyone explain this to me what it means with the numbers 0-9 ? Basically - the "quality" of the Pigeons throat is marked out of 10. The "best" fanciers, I believe, look for a 9 or higher for racers and an 8 or greater for stock birds. (Open to correction guys). The two items that are marked (making up the throat) are the "curtain at the back of the throat which should be correctly aligned, uniform in shape and complete with frills, just as a hanging curtain might be. Above this frill, is a slit, which should agin be perpendicular to the bottom of the frill, straight, unscarred and generally healthy looking. The perfect throat would obviously score a "10". The theory is that of the throat is not good, that the air flow to the lungs and air sacks is disrupted, and therefore the ability of the bird to breathe at a rate which is conducive to top-level flying and racing. Hope this helps. (All open to correction ) Steve
Guest IB Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 My first question is how anyone looking into the pigeon's wide open beak can say with any certainty that the structures described are not fit for purpose? After all, breathing is not normally done with the beak gaping open, and the bird usually is stressed by that. When the beak is tightly closed, no-one can see what is happening when all the bits & bobs are working properly. So how can anyone say what those structures should look like?

Good post, one of my most consistant yearlings and this years young bird were both bred from same pair ,dams side just happens to have double gold award winner in its breeding , cream comes to the top .
Wiley Posted September 17, 2010 Report Posted September 17, 2010 the throat is the only theory I believe in. You will very rarely ever find a hen with a throat score of 10. However in an ideal world you would pair a 10 with a 10, the higher the score to 20 the better.

Tony C Posted September 27, 2010 Report Posted September 27, 2010 You have to ask yourself why some of the advocates of this theory send 80+ young'uns to a race............ have they all got the perfect throat? or..............
holmsidelofts Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 Its a strange thing throat theory, you take some of the best fanciers in the world, people like geoff kirkland, frank tasker, paul haulterman, they all say that the throat theory is the only theory that they believe in. if you watch the secrets of champions dvds it is explained full in there by these champions. When you have people like these guys that fully believe in it there has to be something in it. jas.

bewted Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 no use having any thoery if the pigeons are not up to scratch,,,,,,,,every thoery is only a small part in the make up of a pigeon as theres so much else to look for in any pigeon than just a thoery alone !!!
budgie Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 How many pigeons did they breed to come up with this Theory.Better lookin up their shucter and dont forget the 98% rule.
Guest Brian.Duffy Posted October 12, 2010 Report Posted October 12, 2010 The throat theory has alot going for it and is the only theory I beleave in. Not only does Geoff Kirkland, Frank Tasker and Paul Haulterman beleave in it but here are other class fanciers that do aswell. Ad Schaerlaeckens, Ronnie Williamson and Paul Gregg. When fanciers of this class beleave in something then others should take heed, there not at the top for nothing. Just to be clear having a good throat alone is not going to make a bird a champion it still needs to have good balance, muscle quality and (BRAINS). The throat theory is only one of the things I grade my birds on but I only make that grade when they have been tryed and tested and are finished the moult atb. Brian
