p charlton Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 i am going to be racing from my allotment next year in the next couple of weeks i am going to build a 30foot avary with a wire floor due to having pfl. i will be keeping my stock at home in rabbit cages. i want to have a try at 500m-700m races. due to having to keep training limitied due to pfl ie less handling less time in the car i want to have them on open hole my question is there anything i can buy or make the birds can come and go when they like without anything getting in ie cats cheers
pjc Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I wouldn't have them on open hole! If there are other fanciers on the allotments will they be happy with your birds floating around all day? If you have pfl then an airie loft will help but why not make your left so you can just drive the birds into a basket to reduce contact? It will be very difficult to make the loft secure.
p charlton Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 cheers its mines the only allotment i its just a grave yard nothing else will have to try that
ALF Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I have been on an allotment for the past 7 years, there are 9 of us at our place and if you want to leave your birds out all day then you do it no if's no but's all every day if you like (apart from race days obviously)
Guest THE DOO BOY Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 I have been on an allotment for the past 7 years, there are 9 of us at our place and if you want to leave your birds out all day then you do it no if's no but's all every day if you like (apart from race days obviously) Same we're at an allotment 4 of us no problems except ANDRA ;D
blaz Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 if you are going to have an open bowl for them.then a balanced cat flap would be advised. it will take the weight of one bird two birds it will put it off balance and it will close.(ie if a cat jumps on it it will close sharpish) it is just a balanced board and not that hard to do
Guest kev d Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 if your on your own on the allotment then open hole is a good way of keeping them fit but if you got BOP around you then it,s a risky i have mine on open hole during racing from 6am to 6 pm 7 days aweek you need your traps high up some thing like a anti cat trap where the birds land on a ledge but if a cat trys to land on it it closes up cos it,s to heavy but only one bird at a time can come and go .
p charlton Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 ive been on pens with 3 other people that was bad lol with all the birds about the is no other flyers for a good 1/2 a mile would the birds be more street wise to the bop if they are on open hole
pjc Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 ive been on pens with 3 other people that was bad lol with all the birds about the is no other flyers for a good 1/2 a mile would the birds be more street wise to the bop if they are on open hole Yes, they do get street wise.
Guest kev d Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 if you have BOP around you then they will get to know there is a take away meal any time they want , and yes they do get street wise i know every time there is BOP about cos mine are all in side and if there flying and one comes crusing through they go fly above it right on top of it but you will get casualties but not as many as you think .
p charlton Posted September 10, 2009 Author Report Posted September 10, 2009 the last time i raced the was no bop issues round here will that was 2003 lol the might be now
Guest spin cycle Posted September 10, 2009 Report Posted September 10, 2009 the birds do get streetwise on open hole but you still loose some...in fact i've had as many 'disappear' around the loft as i've lost racing this year ( about 25 races 57-431 miles). i find sept bad and also jan - april...so although i fly open hole i vary the let out time and duration
