Ian McKay Posted November 12, 2009 Author Report Posted November 12, 2009 Bakes is right Cock in the middle Hens (4) in boxes round about him If the hen is locked in the rear of her box there are sliding doors that let the cock see her Once she is ready let her visit the cock in the center return her to box when they have done the business It is possible for him to tread her and all the others twice a day Warning you need already paired couples to float the eggs It's time consumming but if you have a very good cock it's worth it You should get 8 eggs every week
Guest Owen Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I like the idea behind that Bull Box Ian. I can see that there is a slight problem with it if you are running a Widowhood System. The Bull System I use is geared to my Widowhood System. There are two sections with 8 widowhood boxes. I want all the cocks to rear a youngster or two but I do not want birds that have not won anything much to rear youngsters. So I run the hens from the widowhood pairs with the Bull. After he has finished his duties, I have a really good hen spare to be his mate for the rest of the season. In reality I use three Bulls. One for each widowhood section and one to take care of the first round in the stock loft. In practice, it is the best and quickest way I know, to test the breeding value of a breeding cock, and it is the quickest way to upgrade your stock. The down side is that it is an awful lot of work for those few weeks and the mating cycle takes longer than normal because the hens take longer to produce their eggs.
