EYEBROWS Posted October 27, 2009 Report Posted October 27, 2009 Since putting traps on the front of the loft its quite dark inside it doesn't seem to bother the birds, But i was wondering if it will affect them as regards bringing them into form next season. What are your thoughts on this ?
Guest paulrstokes Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 shouldn't be a major problem, providinbg the loft is warm enough
leighton1984 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 how dark is dark and can the birds get to any sun rays in the loft if not i look at an aviary
kev43 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 shouldn't be a major problem, providinbg the loft is warm enough i think u cud b wrong mine was really dark last season and birds didnt perform at all so i have takin half the roof off and fitted upvc corrugated sheets on and now sun will bellow in now and hav put slides in side as 2 shut the sun out if it gets 2 warm inside but not fully shut out made so i can play around wi them ,,hope this helps
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 my lofts dark and my birds performing well but i must admit im putting a window in for more light / ventilation
Guest IB Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 Mine are in a brick garage with just the one window on the front wall. Was very dark, but I put in only the one skylight. If it's dull outside at all I've still to put the light on inside, but a club mate advised me that birds preferred their nest boxes partly shaded, so that's what I aimed for. But my next loft will be more open. Think the sun's rays are the best disinfectant.
pigeon pete57 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 a mate of mine has a loft that when you go in it you have ajob at first to se his birds but he is very hard to beat in racing

Guest Owen Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 You need to listen to Leighton mate. Birds are creatures of the sunlight. Pigeons included. OK they will choose secluded places to nest because they need to feel secure. But they love the sun and they need it to keep them in good health. I reckon that the worst thing to do to a bird is to condemn it to dark and damp conditions. Ugg.
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 just because its dark doesnt make it damp
little sam Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 just because its dark doesnt make it damp I Agree
leighton1984 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 the sun is very good for are birds so i am one for a light loft but i do like to have dark places for the birds plus i do want to control how much sun and air comes in to the loft. i do think that 90% of the loft that are dark do not warm up easy and do not dry out in the winter you can see by how sticky the droppings are in the morning.
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 like clothes on a washing line it will keep dry if getting enough air flow
leighton1984 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 very true old yellow but if the air that comes in to the loft is damp air then what
OLDYELLOW Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 very true old yellow but if the air that comes in to the loft is damp air then what you use something to accelerate the drying process , but even on damp days theres very little sun
leighton1984 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 bring the sun in to the loft even on dark days but i will not go in to that.
EYEBROWS Posted October 28, 2009 Author Report Posted October 28, 2009 On dull days they can just about see to feed, as regards the sunlight they have access to the trap/aviary, judging by the replys it looks like wait and see. Thanks for the replys
leighton1984 Posted October 28, 2009 Report Posted October 28, 2009 ask frank tasker about lofts he is online

adam owen Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 the more sun light the better face the loft south u will get this all day long with plenty of son u get form condition dryer loft eg no damp ect and plus the birds will rest all day long then
Roland Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 Mine are dark.... but then I'm on Naturual so that is good. out plenty to nigh all the time. Fine that the birds ALWAYS go to and settle in the darkest compartments. Indeed return any and every chance they get to. Also the dark keeps them more settled and relaxed.
lightning fast Posted January 14, 2010 Report Posted January 14, 2010 the more sun light the better face the loft south u will get this all day long with plenty of son u get form condition dryer loft eg no damp ect and plus the birds will rest all day long then I agree I have had a loft with not much sun on it and struggled and as soon I changed it to a position where sun was on most of the day, Runner up in young Bird Fed Averages ??)
