Guest mydognumber1 Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Hi allWhen looking for a nice pair of show racers what are the key points to look for in the birds. As the last thing you want as a novice is to build a team around inferior parents or is it that the young are as good as the rearing and loft/food conditionsShane

pjc Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 you are looking for a pair to breed the right characteristics, good heads, right length of keel, dark eye and good constitution to start with. Also you then need to consider colour of stock to get required colour from young.
showman Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 A good strong head, plenty of distance behind eye to back-skull.Good width across skull.Coming from back of skull, over head, and down face, should all flow with a gracious curve. No stop (little dip/indentation) between wattle and face. The line between the two parts of the beak should form a straight line which when looking at the pigeon from the side shold cut the centre of the eye.Good colouring to feathering. Not too long in the leg. When standing, should adopt a certain 'attitude' which says to you...'hey, look at me!!'Body shape & length....ah, now there's the rub !! Whatever suits you. !!!There are other things, but you have to start somewhere, and fortunately not all showmen have the same ideas as to what a show racer should be like. That's the beauty of keeping them...no pre-ordained standard. The above points are only my opinion....that's the one main point you have to remember...what you believe to be correct is your opinion, others will vary.Best of luck.Paul I would advise handling as many birds as you can, fix in your head what is your preference, and build on that.
pjc Posted May 3, 2010 Report Posted May 3, 2010 Keep what you like and not birds for some judges or you'll have a right mish mash! try to build a family and only bring in additions to improve on what you have with very selective breeding.
