Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Anyone else have one of those days were you just feel like packing the birds in!!
frank-123 Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 every saturday during the race season i feel like packing them in and a wednesday if iam racing with the midweek club :D
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Paired up 2 weeks ago, and got all but one hen laid perfect within 7 to 10 days. Had a little bit of trouble with a yearling cock, but sorted him by locking him up. Now, over the last few days Ive been going in the loft to find a hen sat on the wrong nest (everytime I go in its a different nest) , then this morning when checked all the eggs, there was 6 which have been dented. Having pigeons paired up depresses the hell out of me, cant wait to get them back on widowhood.
saleman Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 ITS ALL PART OF THE GAME MATE, JUST GOT TO GET ON WITH IT
Henrik Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Aye know how you feel hate this time of year. Paired up the stock last week had them goin in the boxes and decided to let them out yesterday n they all start goin back wi their old mates so locking them up again as I said hate this time o year but it will get better eh
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 awfull time of the yera. all i do now is open up the doors let them all together then they can pick what they want. if they lay they lay, if they dont im not really bothered
THE FIFER Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 are ur birds getting out, i find once the mating is over and the eggs laid, they have too much spare time now when not sitting more so the cocks and just look for something to do, fight go in other nests etc, get them out as much as possible, but don't give up, we all get this from time to time, also with the cold weather just now some eggs may not hatch if they have been chilled, but atill plenty time yet for breeding, stay with it,
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Gez, I wish I could do that, I always try to be too organised. Ive started chasing the cocks out on a morning while I clean out to stop all the flapping about over my head. It just seems to have been this one dossile hen that has been sitting any nest that she feels like, but ive locked her up now b4 she smashes the entire set of eggs.
mealybar Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Waiting 18 days + 10 to lay is rubbish, but I love it once their hatched. Its swings and roundabouts Were the all settled to their boxes when this happened? If I'm locking them in : pairing up I let 1 pair out day, one night (changeover when I feed in a morning, and on a night) until they all get used to their boxes, then 2 pairs out together, etc.. But then again I have small sections, could see a problem 20 boxes - all birds out once in 10 days!
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Yes she was well settled to her box, although she is paired to a cock that wont leave her alone, she was paired to him as a YB and he flies about an inch away from her when out. If she lands he lands on her back. I would be bothered normally, but she has smashed a pair of eggs of one of my best cock birds. Or well, I suppose the old saying 'Dont count you chicks, b4 they hatch' is right where pigeons are concerned!
carl Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Keep ys chin up spelblin but i know how you are feeling,i had a few watery droppings today and that does my head in setting my mind thinking they are off. my birds are eating grit like theres no tommorow and drinking the drinker dry in hours,i know they have young in the nest but i aint seen them go mad for the grit like this before..its as if they are lacking something...any ideas people
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Mine always go mad for the grit when they have babies. Try putting out pink minerals they usually prefer that and will slow down on the grit. Too much grit will probably cause the watery droppings.
southbankhs Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 CARL GET A BAG OF PROVIT MIX ON TO CORN WITH GEMTHAPAX WILL USUALLY HELPS SLOW DOWN GRIT INTAKE???
Guest marvin Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 hi there carl know just what you mean my birds have done exactly the same with the grit and water so i put loads of grit, minerals, pickstones and pink minerals just about anything i could find in front of them the novilty soon wore off now they dont bother with them one up for me, as to the water i thought if your going to drink the local water board out of water i may aswell turn it to my advantage so i put a bit of this and that in there so if they do drink gallons of it at least i know that they are pumping the youngsters full of goodness now its just a case of gritting my teeth and waiting to wean as for the watery drop[pings i put wood chips ie horse bedding in the loft and its now bone dry so now its not so bloody depressing when i go to the loft hang in there our kid soon be over
carl Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 CARL GET A BAG OF PROVIT MIX ON TO CORN WITH GEMTHAPAX WILL USUALLY HELPS SLOW DOWN GRIT INTAKE??? I have had provit in for a few days nows as last week i noticed my birds wanting to be in the garden alot and eating everything in site,soil/leaves/grass but the droppings were fine then so i added some provit in a pot thinking they must be looking for something else.they ravished the provit and the grit now giving them wet droppings, its got me head twisted :-/
Guest Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Slightly different problems here .. not even paired up either. ;D Decided to do a refresher on basket food & water training BEFORE pairing up, and have had 11 racing cocks in basket since Saturday. Went much as I expected, 3 x 2yo ken the score, eat, drink no bother, released them this morning after 2 overnights in basket; none the worse. Response from yearlings was much as expected too - apart from one or two - too much nonsense and not enough eating & drinking, especially this morning, only one ate; so went in 7pm tonight to feed & water them and discovered one with a bloody wattle and another with a bloody eyecere. Took two injured birds out, leaving other 6 in basket for a third night. Don't know what to expect tomorrow!!!!!! And this with food / water on 3 sides of basket and in company with familiar birds!!! :'( Makes me wonder how they survive in the race basket???? Had been planning to pair up coming weekend, but have decided to put it back a week to do the same with the 12 racing hens. Expect much same, 5 x 2/3 yo ok, and the 7 yearlings, probably not a clue. And the joys of pairing up still to come!!!! Oooh Happpy Daays ;D ;D
carl Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Bruno when you planning pairing up as its getting on a bit.

MsPigeon Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 Live and learn as they say. All these experiences will teach you and others here something. Thanks for shareing. I must say that having individual breeding pens take much if not all these problems away. Best to band them when it is snug to get on Snowy, then you don't have to worry. Yours in the sport and better days! Carol
snowy Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 thanks carol , i will next time, the one 7 days was real snug, i thought i left it too late, i tried 3 times with care, but the other one went on a treat, like you say, we live & learn thanks again.
Guest jason Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 i've seen fanciers put rings on at 10 days old with a little help from a drop of oil or bit of butter!
