aarden Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 what do fanciers think of floor grills for there young birds, how ling do you use them? and do you put straw on the floor etc
westburylofts Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Never used them myself, but i was thinking about it as well. we use deep litter at the moment RAY
Guest Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 I use floor grilles for the old birds, and the birds got used to them real quick. But for the youngsters I use galvanised wire mesh, hard stuff that you can walk on with loft litter underneath. i used the wire instead of grilles because there is more to walk on than the grilles and because they are only little decided it was more comfortable for them. With grilles they can be very unsteady at first. Falling down the gaps etc, not so bad once they are older I expect.
Tony C Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 aarden I use grills in the aviary but not in the racing lofts. I use Easibed in the race lofts, the pigeons love it.
T_T Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Tony C, Would that Easibed stick to your shoe bottoms like most other floor dressings ?
Tony C Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Unfortunately it does but I've found wearing 6inch stiletto heels when in the loft helps alleviate the problem :) like I say the pigeons love it, thats good enough for me.
Guest speckled Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 :o Never used "grilled floors " never will. was give some years ago put them down, dont like :X the mess that collects underneath. :-/. as we all no when a pigeon eats it fussy thay flick the corn around and even if feed in the boxes thay manage to get it over the floor, with the grill it always falls between then so the birds cant get to the corn & is lying in the droppings, :-/ so a ply wooden floor without grills is for me.Speck
Guest Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I have heard that the Belgains and Dutch have ceased using grilled floors when they are racing, they cover their grills up with plywood. We have concrete floors, but live in a very dry atmosphere (normally) and I can use a sweeping brush to clear the droppings in summer.
aarden Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 thanks everyone for your advice,i have grills but dont like them,i just wanted your thoughts thanks
Guest Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 ive never used them dont think i will i dont like the build up of rubbish underneath them have been to a loft where they are and straight away i could smell mice, they would have a field day on the wasted corn underneath them.
Guest jason Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I won't be using them i have bare floors, scraped twice per day, morning and afternoon.
