T_T 10 years ago it seemed like every other week throughout the winter we was off to a Prize Presentation, sadly that's not the case now. Whether its the falling membership or people aren't as sociable nowadays I don't know.

I THINK THE PROBLEM AS WITH LOTS OF THINGS IN THE FANCY NOW IS GETTING PEOPLE TO HELP, U JUST CANNOT GET THE WORKERS NOW, AND ITS USUALY LEFT UP TO THE SECRETARY WHO HAS BEEN AT IT ALL DURING THE RACING SEASON, THEN HE IS LEFT TO GET THE TROPHIES IN AND HAVE THEM CLEANED FOR THE PRESENTAION ETC, THERE IS A LOT OF WORK INVOLVED ORGANISING THESE PRESENTAIONS ETC, ITS THE SAME WITH BUBLICITY, GETTING RESULTS ETC, ITS NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE,JUST LOOK AT SOME OF THE MINI SITES  WHEN THEY WERE LAST UPDATED OR HAVE ANYTHING ON THEM,

this was a cracking night and well supported

The Teesside Federation and Ormesby Progressive held its 2005 annual presentation evening on Friday 4th November at the North Ormesby Institute. Fed chairman Karl Pogson opened the evening welcoming the very large crowd of fanciers, family and friends to the joint pay-out night, before informing the members that the Fed sent a total of 34,637 birds to the Up North Combine 26-race programme. The Fed paid out over a mouth watering £5,000 in prizes from the well organised ring schemes, breeder/buyer, £20 yearling nom and £20 young bird noms. Points are awarded to the first 20 with 20pts for a Fed win down to 1pt for 20th Fed, no point money is paid out but the members fly for £55 a race that is awarded to the winner of the Fed nom. This is very popular with the members, for a number of the fanciers were surprised when they had to take to the floor to receive their unexpected prize money. After the intro the wise cracking Karl asked yours truly to present the silverware, after a few words it was on with the presentation. Before I go on I wish to thank the members and officials of the Teesside Federation for inviting Carole, Claire and myself along to their great night, with Carole sending her thanks for the beautiful gift she received. I also have to give praise to the very hard working Fed secretary Ian Snaith, who is always looking for improvement to make his empire the No1 Fed. Ian left the sport at the end of the 2004 racing season, the lad flew in partnership with his Father flying as Trevor Snaith & Son of the Beechwood & Easterside Club. The partnership had built a winning team together the last few seasons, with them topping the Fed twice in 2003 when the Teesside Federation consisted of around 16 Clubs. Trevor & Ian’s first Fed win of that year was achieved at Lillers (1) when there were 1,750 birds competing, the pole position Fed winner went onto score a very impressive 10th UNC from a convoy of 20,859 birds. Fed win number two of 2003 came the lofts way at OB Epping (2) when there were 2,984 birds away. Trevor & Ian had another Fed winner in 2004 from young bird Selby (3) when there were 1,789 birds competing, this was the duo’s final race before putting their birds up for auction a few weeks later. 2004 was the year the Teesside split into two Fed’s after being the largest Fed in the whole of the UNC, the other five of the Fed’s Clubs formed the Tees Valley Federation. Before going it to the winners of 2005 I have to stress that I don’t have the full list of prizewinners, sorry to the results I don’t have on hand.

Top prizewinner for the second successive season was the outstanding loft of Alistair McLeod of Billingham TUC; the lad with his former partner Keith Perkins enjoyed winning 1st Up North Combine old bird Folkestone National in 1991 from a convoy of 22,375 birds. What a brillient season Alistair enjoyed, the lad who was accompanied by his wife Linda was third highest OB inland points winner with 188pts. The very popular Alistair was the winner of the channel average with 120pts and also the winner of the YB average on 350pts, without a doubt the lad was also the winner of the combined average with a grand total of 658pts. Not only was Alistair a whacking 252pts clear of the r/u loft, his consistent outstanding loft performances throughout the 2005 racing season saw him set a new points record. Alistair also enjoyed winning the Bird of the Year with a 2y who scored a total of 54pts; other loftmates scored 45pts, 40pts and a couple of his other bird’s netted 30pts each. Alistair topped the Fed on three occasions in 2005 with his first chart-topper being achieved at Lillers in a South-West wind when his 2y cheq pied hen out flew an entry of 958 birds. Alistair’s chart-topper went on to score a useful 114th UNC from a convoy of 20,591 birds. Fed win number two came in fantastic style at Maidstone (light North-West wind) with the winner being a yearling hen when the birds were brought back from Lillers (2) to be liberated on British soil. Alistair enjoyed the loft performance highlight of the season scoring seven position in the first 15 of the Fed, the lad’s first- four timers won a most impressive 1st, 3rd, 5th and 6th Fed when there were 674 birds competing, the quartet went onto to score a notable 18th, 82nd, 155th and 158th UNC from a convoy of 14,701 birds. Alistair’s hatrick of Fed wins came his way at YB Mansfield (light North-West wind) when his young blue hen beat an entry of 2,657 birds. Now where are we? yes; Alistair won the Lillers 2-bird Fed nom banking the £55 prize money. The Fed £20 YB nom had 26 flying members for £65 a race for the first 8 YB races, Alistair pocketed the Maidstone National £65 prize money to add to his long list of honours. I must not forget that the lad also won a raffle prize, as Linda took to the floor to many cheers to receive the prize, Alistair shouted ‘Linda get the Cigar’s’. Alistair who won 1st Fed OB Melton Mowbray (2) in 2004 from a convoy of 2,999 birds almost had the taste of taking a long draw on the Cigar and lying back in the chair to take a well-earned rest after a first class racing season, as Linda got to the raffle prize table. But that was not the end product for Linda had other thoughts on the prize; the lass choose a bottle of Whisky for Alistair’s Dad. I’m sure Alistair wouldn’t begrudge the Whisky a good home. I’m almost sure that Alistair the longest flying loft scored Fed points in all but one race, which is an impeccable record. I have been in the game long enough to know that a number of fanciers look at loft location when it comes to loft performances, I’m a big believer that good fit Pigeons will win their way through in any wind and weather conditions. And I also believe that was the case for Alistair in 2005, for the lad produced a string of top winning performances. Alistair puts a lot of time and effort into his birds and for the second season running, the lad has reaped the rewards by being the Teesside Federation top loft.

Paul Gatley & Bob Harrod of Haverton Hill made sure they were second highest prizewinners after some very impressive performances. The two lads’ were fifth highest OB inland points winners with 159pts and another 37pts were netted at the channel, the duo were also r/u YB average with 220pts to give the r/u combined average winners a season total of 416pts. Paul & Bob were also r/u Bird of the Year and winners of the Young Bird of the Year with a youngster that scored a total of 50pts, the youngster top performances produced a Fed winner. The two lads’ had a second bird chalk up 39pts and another couple of birds netting 30pts each. The loft topped the Fed three times throughout the season, with their first Fed topper coming at OB North Weald (1) when their 2y blue cock beat the convoy of 1,662 birds. Paul & Bob’s other two pole position Fed wins were achieved from back-to-back young bird races, a blue hen won top spot from North Weald when there were 1,234 birds competing. The lad’s achieved their second Fed win on the trot from the Maidstone National when their inform young cheq hen saw off the entry of 795 birds. The duo were also the winners of a new T3 clock from the OB Folkestone (1) National and they also won a couple of 2-bird noms, with them being achieved at OB North Weald (1) and Folkestone (1) which saw them lift £110 for their top picking. More hard earned cash came the partnerships way at OB North Weald when they won the yearling nom and £85. The Fed breeder/buyer that raised £1,360 was a very profitable event for Paul & Bob, the prize money was shared between the first 8 YB races with £170 flown for from each race that paid out £85 for the breeder and £85 for the buyer. Paul & Bob won three of the eight breeder & buyer events winning £510 for their Melton Mowbray, Huntingdon and Maidstone wins. The bank notes rolled in again from the Fed £5 ring scheme for young birds, each loft had the chance to purchase up to five rings @ £5 per ring. The £1,250 raised from the sale of the rings was split into seven YB races with £100 for 1st and £50 for 2nd; £150 1st prize and £50 2nd prize was up for grabs at the Maidstone National. Paul & Bob enjoyed a couple of prize money pulls, netting 1st and £100 at Newark and 2nd at Maidstone and £50. Paul & Bob have being very successful in the Fed in the past, in 2002 when flying as Gatley, Harrod & Higgins a very impressive 1st, 2nd and 4th Club, 5th, 6th and 8th Fed, 35th, 43rd and 63rd UNC OB Eastbourne National was won from a convoy of 26,854 birds. The three lads’ were stopped from winning the first-three Club positions by Appleton & Longstaff who won 3rd Club, 7th Fed and 54th Combine. The three lads’ also won 1st Club, 1st Fed and 8th UNC Chenoise when there were 6,202 birds and 1st Club, 1st Fed OB Epping from an entry of 2,807 birds, they recorded their third Fed win of 2002 at YB Mansfield when their pole position Fed winning youngster beat an entry of 3,658 birds. The trio had one Fed win in 2003 with that being enjoyed at OB Melton Mowbray (3) when there were 2,059 birds competing. The partnership of Gatley, Harrod & Higgins excelled themselves in 2004 when the inform loft won 4x1st Feds, their OB Fed win was achieved at the new race point Le Ferte’ Bernard when their winner went onto win a very impressive 1st Section winning a special UNC prize and 7th UNC from a convoy of 5,427 birds. Wood Bros of Great Ayton fame won 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 17th UNC, while Peter Nee, Mr & Mrs Brian Clement of Great Ayton chalked up 3rd Club, 4th Fed and 46th Combine. Another couple of notable performance were achieved at OB Folkestone (1) National when they won 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 7th UNC from a convoy of 29,471 birds. The duo were beaten in the Fed that day by G Duffy of Middlesbrough who won 2nd UNC and a UNC Silver Medal for his fantastic performance, as Mr Duffy would not be alive to receive his Silver Medal at the UNC presentation night the UNC secretary Pam Grange arranged for the Silver Medal to be to presented to Mr Duffy shortly after his memorable win. Paul & Bob produced another great performance at Clermont when their Club winner went onto score 2nd Fed and 39th Combine when there were 11,585 birds competing. Paul & Bob’s remaining three Fed wins of 2004 were all won with the young birds and achieved in three consecutive weeks. Their first YB chart-topper came at Huntingdon and the following week they won pole position at Epping. Fed win number three off the belt was chalked up at the Maidstone National when the winning baby went onto score 108th UNC from a convoy of 14,753 birds. Clubmates Stuart Lewis & Leanne McCabe netted 2nd Club, 2nd Fed and 129th Combine.

Stuart Lewis & Leanne McCabe who have obtained stock from Alistair McLeod were third highest prizewinners, Haverton Hill chairman Stuart and secretary Leanne proved they could hold their own by winning the OB inland average with 225pts, another 38pts were scored at the channel and 95pts were chalked up with the young birds to give a seasons tally of 358pts. Stuart & Leanne who are very good workers for their Club, best bird netted 38 Fed points. The partnership had a Fed win in 2005 with that being achieved at young bird Selby (3) the final race of the campaign, their pole position winner being a cheq cock that out witted a convoy of 809 birds. Stuart & Leanne did well in the money stakes winning the OB Folkestone (1) 2-bird nom and £55, the duo also won £170 in the yearling nom after winning Selby and Lillers. Stuart and Leanne went to town in the Fed £20 YB nom event winning the £65 prize money on three occasions, the duo’s £195 was won at Selby, Newark and Huntingdon. More money was won in the £5 ring scheme when 1st and £100 was won at YB Selby (1). Stuart & Leanne had a couple of Fed wins in 2004, the duo’s first chart-topper was enjoyed at the OB Folkestone (2) National when there was 927 birds away. The partnership’s second Fed win of 2004 came at Lillers (2) when they filled a couple of thimbles to win 1st and 2nd Club, 1st and 3rd Fed (735 birds), 28th and 61st UNC from a convoy of 16,958 birds, with their chart-topper winning 1st Section and a special UNC prize. Mark Caswell split Stuart & Leanne in the Fed that day by scoring 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 46th Combine. Mark Caswell of Beechwood & Easterside came out of the stalls as quick as lightening to win 1st Fed from the first 3 old bird races, Mark’s Selby chart-topper a 2y cheq hen beat off the entry of 1,484 birds. A yearling blue hen won pole position at Newark (1) when there were 998 birds competing; and a 4y cheq hen made it a hatrick of wins for the unstoppable Mark at Melton Mowbray (1) from a convoy of 2,444 birds. Mark must have asked Ian Snaith for advice on how to keep the birds in Federation winning form, for Mark didn’t top the Fed again until the Folkestone (1) National when his 4y cheq hen saw off the entry of 724 birds. Mark’s top performances earned him r/u OB inland average with 214pts, the lad scored 46pts at the channel and netted 56pts with the young birds to give him a total of 316pts to be fourth highest prizewinner in 2005. Mark’s best bird throughout the season was his Selby Fed winner that notched up a total of 30pts. Mark did exceptional well in the breeder/buyer with the youngster bred by Frost & Thatcher, he invested very well winning the back-to-back Mansfield and Newark races before scoring his third win at North Weald to give both lofts £255 in prize money. Mark had two Fed wins in 2004 when his OB Melton Mowbray (2) chart-topper beat an entry of 2,267 birds, and his Melton Mowbray (4) winner out flew the entry of 1,000 birds. The lad had one Fed win in 2003, with his solo pole position winner being achieved at OB Huntingdon when there were 4,218 birds competing. Mark also topped the Fed from OB Huntingdon (2) in 2002 when there were 2,540 birds away.

Fifth highest prizewinners in 2005 was the loft of Marsay, Taylor & Robinson of Great Ayton fame; Dave, Trevor and the late Alan who have enjoyed much success over the years scored 98pts OB inland. The lads’, who are the previous winners of 1st UNC Abbeville in 1990 from a convoy of 14,828 birds, may not have had one of their best seasons in the Fed but that is understandable as they only flew yearlings. This was due to having all their old bird race team stolen in the close season, this would have been enough to finish a lot of fanciers off but not Dave & Trevor. The loft also scored 36pts at the channel to prove what a class act Dave & Trevor are despite not having any old birds to race. The duo’s most notable performance was when they won 1st Club, 4th Fed, 85th UNC OB Maidstone. Dave & Trevor’s young birds flew outstanding producing a number of top performances to win 7x1st Clubs, the two lads’ scored 143 young bird points to score 277pts in all races. The partnership did have a Fed win in 2005 with that coming at YB Selby (2) when their blue hen outwitted the convoy of 2,389 birds. Dave & Trevor who won 3rd UNC OB Folkestone (1) when there were 25,199 birds competing and 2nd UNC Lillers (2) from a convoy of 18,615 birds with the same bird in 1997, banked a few quid with the young birds. The two lads’ pocketed £55 in the Fed 2-bird nom at OB Maidstone and netted another £250 in the ring scheme, 1st was won at Melton Mowbray and 2nd was chalked up at Newark, Huntingdon and North Weald. Dave & Trevor enjoyed a Fed win in 2004 with that being won at Bourges out of an entry of 137 birds, their winner went onto score a most impressive 17th Combine from a convoy of 2,123 birds. Brian Atkinson & Keith Perkins of Billingham TUC achieved 176pts throughout the 2005 racing season, with 157 of the duo’s points being netted OB inland and the remaining 19pts coming from the channel. Brian & Keith had no Fed wins in 2005 but they did chalk up a very impressive 2nd Club, 2nd Fed, 21st UNC OB Maidstone. The lads’ best bird of their racing season was a 2y that notched up 32 Fed points, Brian & Keith have enjoyed much better years than this. The partnership topped the Fed three times in 2004 with their first pole position win coming at OB Mansfield when there were 2,050 birds competing. Melton Mowbray (3) produced their second win of the year when there were 600 birds away, and win number three came the lads’ way at YB Newark from a convoy of 2009 birds. The duo won 1st Fed YB Melton Mowbray in 2003 out of an entry of 3,600 birds, and topped the Fed charts at YB Huntingdon in 2002 when there were 3,165 birds competing. It was the same year they timed a couple of birds at OB Maidstone National to chalk up a useful 2nd and 4th Club, 2nd and 10th Fed, 7th and 41st UNC from a convoy of 21,338 birds. Even top lofts can go through a quite spell, I’m in no doubt that Brian & Keith will bounce back to produce a number of winning performances in 2006. Brian enjoyed the presentation evening with him getting up on the dance floor a number of times throughout the night. The lad also took to the stage to sing the Frank Sinatra number ‘I did it my way’; Keith may have being thinking that if they’d done it his way, they might have scored a few more points.

Appleton & Longstaff OB inland season brought 54pts; they netted 49pts at the channel with their most notable position being 7th Fed, 160th Combine Maidstone. The Haverton Hill partnership picked up 42 YB points to amass a total of 145pts, the two lads’ best bird scored 40 Fed points and they had another couple of birds net 37 and 32pts. The duo were in the money in the £5 Fed ring scheme when winning the North Weald £100 and the Maidstone National £150. One of the partnerships best ever performance came in 1999 when they won 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 8th UNC old bird Folkestone (1) National from a convoy of 29,070 birds. Brian Jaffray was Ormesby Progressive best flyer in the Fed in 2005 with the lad scoring a total of 141pts, Brian chalked up 83 OB inland points and notched up 29pts from both the channel and with the young birds. Brian who won 1st Fed Melton Mowbray (5) in 2004 from an entry of 1,009 birds enjoyed two Fed wins this time around with the first being achieved at OB Huntingdon, when his yearling blue pied cock saw off an entry of 1,243 birds. Brian’s second win came at Clermont (2) when there were 167 birds competing, the 2y cheq cock went onto score a very impressive 62nd UNC from a convoy of 3,689 birds. Brian won the 2-bird nomination from Clermont and won a T3 clock, the lad won the YB Fed nom at Melton Mowbray and also won the YB Mansfield £5 ring scheme. Teesside Federation President Norman Dixon of Billingham TUC was the winner of 1st Fed OB Folkestone (1) National from a convoy of 1,474 birds, one of the quite men of the sport’s winner being a 2y cheq cock. Norman scored 119pts for the year, with all his points being netted from the OB inland races. The lad had three cash pulls with 1st 2-bird nom from North Weald (2) being won; the yearling nom was won at two of the Melton Mowbray races. Norman has had a Fed win for four consecutive seasons, for the lad won 1st Fed YB Melton Mowbray in 2004 when there were 1,798 birds competing. Norman’s 2003 pole position Fed win was achieved at OB Selby from a convoy of 4,482 birds. The lad’s 2002 1st Fed OB Maidstone National winner went onto score a most impressive 5th UNC from a convoy of 21,338 birds, Atkinson & Perkins timed a couple of birds to lift 2nd and 4th, Club, 2nd and 9th Fed, 7th and 41st Combine. Harland Bros & Johnson netted 2nd Club, 5th Fed and 26th UNC and Gatley, Harrod & Higgins potted 1st Club, 6th Fed and 34th Combine, while Trevor Snaith & Son Ian filled a couple of chambers to win 1st and 2nd Club, 8th and 10th Fed, 39th and 62nd UNC to round off a great days racing for the Teesside Federation from the Natioanl race.

The Great Ayton partnership of Harland Bros & Johnson notched up a season tally of 112pts, with their OB inland season seeing them score 53pts. Jonathan (The Brown Bear) David & Steve chalked up 59pts from the channel to earn them r/u Fed channel average, the three lads’ won 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 162nd Combine Lillers and also won 1st Club, 4th Fed, 225th UNC Clermont (1) from a convoy of 11,444 birds. The Brown Bear, David & Steve won the OB Huntingdon 2-bird nom and were the breeders of the Selby (1) £85 prize money. The lads’ had a Fed win in 2005 with that being enjoyed at OB Newark (2) when their 4y cheq cock beat an entry of 2,207 birds. Clubmates Derek (Boko) McDonald & Son (Scranner) must have been taking tips from Ginger Billy for the Father & Son partnership chalked up 77 OB inland points and 30pts with the youngsters to give them a tally of 107pts. The duo weaved their way into the Fed winner’s enclosure at YB Newark when there were 2,768 birds competing, with their pole position Fed winner being a blue cock. Boko & Scranner’s best bird was a 2y that netted 35 Fed points, the two lads’ won a couple of Fed 2-bird noms with them being banked at Melton Mowbray and Huntingdon.

Staying with Great Ayton we see the loft of Mr & Mrs Godfrey & Sue Dee & Son pocketing 106pts with 44 of them being notched up with the OB inland, the partnership enjoyed a better YB run with them scoring 62pts. Godfrey & Sue’s Clubmates Wood Bros potted 85 OB inland points and 21pts from the channel to see them score a total of 106pts, with Dougie & Albert’s best performance coming at Clermont (2) when they won a very notable 1st Club, 2nd Fed and 77th UNC. Dougie & Albert have enjoyed much success over the years including their 1st UNC Provins Gold Medal winning performance in 1991 from a convoy of 6,590 birds. Still with Great Ayton, Peter Nee & Mr & Mrs Brian Clement proved Brian performs better with Pigeons than he does at Snooker, for the loft scored 79pts. The partnership scored 33pts at the channel, with them lifting 2nd Club, 5th Fed and 236th UNC Clermont (1) and chalking up 2nd Club, 4th Fed and 113th Combine Clermont (2). Brian and Co potted 38pts with the youngsters, more points then he has ever achieved at Snooker. Clubmate Keith McDonald notched up 21pts from the channel. Jaffray Bros of Ormesby Progressive netted 38 old bird inland points and 31pts with the young birds, Colin who is better known as Molly was in the money when winning the Fed 2-bird nom at Melton Mowbray. Ormesby Invitation’s Kenny Cuthbert chalked up 63pts with the young birds; the lad enjoyed some success in the money events. Kenny was 2nd Selby (1) £5 ring scheme and won the Selby (2) event when W Calvert netted 2nd, Kenny also banked 2nd again at Melton Mowbray. Kenny also enjoyed winning 1st breeder and buyer at Selby (2), the reason given that no one wanted his bird. More likely Kenny wanted all the £170 prize money for himself, which paid dividends in the end. Kenny had a Fed win in 2004 with that being achieved at YB Mansfield when there were 1,723 birds competing. Beachwood & Easterside duo Derek Gibson & Maurice Burnip scored 27 young bird points, the two lads’ stamped their approval by winning 1st Fed Selby (1) from a convoy of 2,480 birds. With their pole position Fed winner being a blue cock bred by Harland Bros & Johnson, Derek & Maurice banked the £85 buyer prize money. Mr & Mrs Pearce & Freeman of the Ormesby Invitation scored 19 channel points and Denny Moloney of Ormesby Progressive netted 18pts from the channel, more on this in the Progressive report. Mr & Mrs Dave & Nancy Kelly were the winners of the £85 Newark yearling nom.

Moving onto the Ormesby Progressive roll of honour winners, thanks to Roly Hartley for the list of winners. Brian Jaffray enjoyed an absolutely brillient season, winning an outstanding 12x1st, 9x2nd, 7x3rd, 4x4th and 9x5th, the lad scored a total of 134pts and also won 61 prize money points. Brian’s consistent flying throughout the season saw him win the old bird inland average, channel average, young average, combined average, the best yearling from Lillers and the best young bird. Brian started the season in the winners’ enclosure after timing a couple of 3y cocks at Selby to win 1st and 4th, after failing to score from Newark (1) Brian hit back in great style at Melton Mowbray (1) when three yearlings were timed to win 1st, 3rd and 5th. The lad was in the frame again a week later at the Maidstone National to pocket the green, to end a fantastic season.

Jaffray Bros were the Clubs second highest prizewinners with 4x1st, 4x2nd, 6x3rd, 8x4th, 3x5th and 73pts, Molly was also the scorer of 26 prize money points. Colin March was the Ormesby Progressive third highest prizewinner with 55pts; the lad was the winner of 3x1st, 6x2nd, 1x3rd, 3x4th, 7x5th and 22 money points. Colin enjoyed a good clocking day at Newark (2) when no less than three birds were timed to lift 2nd, 4th and 5th, Newark proved to be a good race point for Colin after chalking up five positions from both races. Colin followed up his useful Newark (2) performance by filling a single cell at North Weald (1) to pot the blue. Win number two of the season came Colin’s way at Melton Mowbray (2) when he timed a couple of cocks to win 1st and 5th, Colin’s red card winner being a 2y cheq cock that won 1st Club Newark (1). The lad was back in the points at Clermont (1) when a single bird was timed to lift 2nd spot; Colin timed his double winner in at Folkestone (2) to chalk up 2nd position. Clermont (2) brought 4th and Maidstone saw another single cell filled to notch up 5th, Colin netted 5th again a week later at YB Selby (1) when a blue pied cock filled chamber one. The lad timed a couple of blue cocks at Selby (2) to pocket 2nd and 5th, Colin netted his second YB win in brillient style at Melton Mowbray when no less than three young hens were timed to win a very impressive 1st, 3rd and 4th. Colin’s next points were netted at North Weald where the blue was potted; the lad rounded his season off by notching up 5th Selby (3).

Mr & Mrs Dave & Nancy Kelly netted 16 times in 2005, the duo were the winners of 1x1st, 3x2nd, 5x3rd, 4x4th, 3x5th, 43pts and 14 money points. Big Dave and his good Lady Nancy first chalked at OB Newark (1) when a yearling cheq hen was timed to pot the green, a 2y blue cock was in the clock at Melton Mowbray (1) to lift 4th place. The Husband & Wife partnership won top spot at Newark (2) when a 2y dark cheq cock won the honours. After a time out of the points Dave & Nancy returned to the frame at Huntingdon to notch up 5th with a yearling blue hen, the next chalk came at Maidstone when a yearling cheq hen netted 2nd spot. Dave & Nancy quickly followed that up by timing a blue cock at young bird Selby (1) to lift 3rd, a cheq pied hen was in the clock a week later at Mansfield to pocket the yellow. The duo were more than happy with their youngsters performance at Mansfield after no fewer than three babies were timed to score a notable 2nd, 3rd and 5th, with the blue and green card potters being cheq hens and the third timer being a blue hen. Dave & Nancy were enjoying a good run as they were in the frame for the fifth consecutive week at Newark, when a cheq cock was timed to net 3rd position. After being out of the points at Melton Mowbray Dave & Nancy were amoungst them again at Huntingdon when a blue pied cock potted the blue and a blue cock netted 4th. The partnership enjoyed their second good clocking day with the young birds at North Weald when no less than three youngsters were timed to lift 3rd, 4th and 5th. I have to say that I was impressed with Dave & Nancy’s consistent young bird performances; I hope they can improve on their performances in 2006. Dawson & Colin Stizaker scored 21pts and 7 money points; Colin was the scorer of 3x2nd, 1x3rd, 3x4th and 1x5th. Colin notched up his first points of the year at OB Newark (1) when a yearling blue cock was timed to pocket 4th spot, the lad potted the yellow for the second time at Lillers when a 2y cheq hen filled cell one. A 2y blue pied cock took 5th at Clermont (1) and chalked up 2nd at Melton Mowbray (3), Colin potted the blue again at Bourges when his game 3y cheq hen went onto score a notable 92nd UNC. Colin was in the points for the fourth consecutive channel race at Clermont (2) when a 2y blue pied hen was clocked to net 3rd position. Colin chalked twice with the young birds with his first prize card coming at Newark when a blue hen potted the yellow, the lad also notched up 2nd Selby (3) with a cheq cock.

Mr & Mrs Lenny & Mavis Hartley were the winners of 2x1st, 1x2nd, 1x3rd, 2x4th and 21pts, the duo also picked up 9 money points. The Husband & Wife partnership kicked off the year after timing a 4y blue cock at OB Newark (1) to lift the blue card. The duo recorded their first win of the season at Clermont (1) when a 3y blue hen won top spot, the same hen chalked up 4th at Melton Mowbray (3). Lenny & Mavis enjoyed their second win of the season at young bird Selby (1) when they’re well out in front blue hen won pole position. The lofts season came to a close when a couple of Chambers were filled at Selby (3) to lift 3rd and 4th, both timers being blue hens and the duo’s green card scorer being the youngster who topped the Selby (2) charts. Moving onto Les Bellwood who scored 11pts and 5 money points was the winner of 1x1st and 2x3rd. The lad timed a yearling cheq cock at Lillers to take 3rd and filled a couple of thimbles at OB Maidstone to win 1st and 3rd, with the red card being won by a yearling cheq and the green was taken by a 3y cheq hen. Paul Duggan won 1x1st, 1x3rd and 8pts, the lad also chalked up 4 prize money points. Both of Paul’s positions were won by the same blue hen, she topped the charts at Selby (1) and netted the green at Huntingdon. Mr & Mrs Roly & Glynis scored twice by winning 1x1st, 1x4th, 7pts and 3 money points, with both of the duo’s positions scored with the young birds from the last two races of the season. Roly & Glynis’ yellow card was potted at the Maidstone National with a cheq hen, the duo’s Selby (3) red card winner was also a cheq hen. Roly has just stepped down as Club secretary after seven years service, the lad has served the Club well and I hope he enjoys his free time. The lad enjoyed a Fed win in 2004 with that being achieved at young bird Selby (1) when there were 2,234 birds competing. Roly likes to compete at Bourges where he has being successful in the past, the lad won 1st Club, 5th Fed and 63rd UNC Bourges in 2003 from a convoy of 2,741 birds. Mr & Mrs Pearce & Freeman chalked up 12th Fed and 147th UNC from the same race. Denny Moloney was a stickler for Bourges and his long wait to win the big one was achieved in 2005, but sadly the very popular and well respected Denny passed away a few days before the outstanding and very fitting Bourges win. Denny’s Bourges win earned him 5pts and 3 money points, with the lad’s winner being a 2y red cock that went onto score a very impressive 48th UNC. Denny’s Wife Helen took to the floor to receive the Bourges trophy on Denny’s behalf; many of the very large crowd had attended the presentation evening for Denny and his family. It was a very emotional moment when Helen took to the floor to receive the Bourges trophy, naturally fighting back the tears to proudly receive the much-treasured trophy. Chris Walker scored three times, chalking up 1x3rd, 2x5th, 5pts and 1money point. Chris clocked a yearling blue hen at OB Selby to notch up 5th place; the lad timed a 2y blue cock at Clermont (2) to take 5th and clocked a blue cock at young bird Selby (2) to pot the green.

That is the 2005 roll of honours list for the Ormesby Progressive and the Teesside Federation. The raffle followed the presentation of the outstanding array of silverware, there were a great number of prizes which did not leave much room on the stage for the disco equipment. After the buffet it was back to the music, it was good to see so many get up to sing. Pauline Pogson and the McEtts had to get up to sing ‘Simply The Best’ for the Teesside Federation Champion Alistair McLeod. Ian’s Sister-in-law was a scream laid out on the table on the stage doing her Madonna routine, if that’s what lager does to you; I’ll stick to my orange juice in future. I have to give a mention to Mrs Christine Snaith, who helped out wherever she could. The lass has also being a great help to Ian throughout the season, I have to say she looked stunning in a very noticeable dress. Daughter Jade & Son Ben also helped Ian & Christine by selling the raffle tickets, the young duo did not take long to sell all the raffle tickets. Ben also gave his Mam a break by taking a few photos and not content with that he took over the drawing of the raffle tickets and also took over the door while Dave Kelly refilled his beer glass, all in all it was a brillient night. I would like to take the opportunity to wish the Teesside Federation members all the very best for the 2006-racing season

After a 30 year gap, did notice HUGE difference in presentation night: for one thing, the family social evening had bitten the dust and it was fanciers only, predominantly men; no music, no dinner, no dance. Also, rather than the then few select trophies for the 'Averages' and the longest race, there was now a cup for around half a dozen averages and every race; so presentations take up a bigger chunk of the evening.

Our last club presentation was fairly poorly attended, even given the winter weather. Clubmate remarked afterwards that there's much of a sameness to it all now, as he'd been going for around 50 years??

The main highlights for me really are the company and the guest speakers ... obviously make or break the night ... and open forum, where some really intersting stuff usually comes out, seems to go down better than straight Q&A.

No offence to the previous post, but I think that part of it is the real killer; good publicity is due to good performances, but when you get screeds and screeds of it in the pigeon press, especially in November on a race in April, its a proper turn-the-page for me. Maybe scribes could try and change the format and time their reports nearer the event?

I DO NOT THINK ITS THE SCRIBES TO BLAME FOR LATE NEWS ETC, THEY CAN ONLY PUT IT IN WHEN GIVEN, I SOMETIMES GET ABOUT 5-6 RACE RESULTS SENT IN TOGETHER FROM CLUBS, INSTEAD OF SENDING THEM IN WEEKLY, ALSO ITS HARD TO GET WINNERS TO GIVE U INFO REGARDING THERE BIRDS ETC, AND I AGREE ITS NOT GOOD READING JUST SEING SO AND SO 1ST SO AND SO 2ND, BUT IF THIS IS ALL U ARE GETTING, THE PUBLICITY AND NEWS ARE LIKE THE PRESENTATIONS THEY ARE GOING DOWN, I PUT ON A MINI SITE FOR MY FED WHICH I USED TO GET LOTS OF INFO, THE SITE IS STILL ON BUT I NOW RECEIVE VERY VERY LITTLE INFO TO PUT ON IT,

Wasn't a dig at scribes like yourself, Fifer, just a voiced thought that one or two simple changes might improve things, like using email rather than snail mail for speed and easier page setting at the office end,  and setting a target to get Saturdays results published the following Friday; if it's not in in time, it doesn't go in.

Shorten & spice up the general 'football results format' you describe, generally up standards - some reports don't even give you the date of the race or a feel for the distances flown - and a little snippet of up-to-date info reads better and is more likely to be read up and down the country than screeds of stuff months old..

And will be in that role this year for Scottish North West Fed ... so you all ken fine now whats in store .... any complaints address them to: the waste-paper bin @  ;D
