Any suggestions as me and my father race pigeons for the last 15 years together , this year 2006 has been the worst sparrowhawk apparances in our area , i have had about 4 atttacks but lucky enough not took any pigeons.

We see the hawk nearly every day , and it is becoming a problem

I DONT LIKE HAWKS ONE BIT, HALF THE TIME I FEEL LIKE SHOOTING THEM DOWN OR PROBS EVEN WORSE TO LET THEM SUFFER, ITS SIK IN THE HEAD WHEN THEY GET A HOLD OF YOU PIGEON ESPECIALLY IF ITS A GOOD ONE THATS WHEN I REALLY DO FEEL LIKE RINGIN THER NECKS LOL

You'll have a job to shoot them - have you seen how quick they are? I've even seen them fly through thick leaved trees.

I think it is true that pigeons become "streetwise" where the sparrow hawk is concerned.

In my experience a sparrow hawk tries to surprise the birds. I'm not sure if they will take a bird from the air unless a bird is just taking off. ( someone will correct me)

In early summer I could have four or five visits in one day - I've even confronted one eye to eye about three feet from my face - and it scared the sh** out of me!!!!!

I have always encouraged loads of wild birds into my garden and found them to extra eyes for the pigeons - Havent lost one yet (tempting fate).

I've had sparrow hawks take birds off the house roof but I can't shoot them (I live in the middle of a housing estate) and I've had enough grief of the neighbours about avian flu so I wouldn't want to be seen waving a gun around. :(

JOKING ASIDE HAVE YOU TRIED USING CD'S, I KNOW FANCIERS WHO HAVE TRIED THIS AND THEY SAY THEY HAVE HAD GREAT SUCCESS WITH THEM.ARE YOU IN A PLACE WHERE YOUR GARDEN OR LOFT CAN BE OVERLOOKED ?  IF NOT SET A TRAP.

not a good idea tammy unless its a springer at a dead bird , better to shoot them of the top of the bird it strikes , sparrowhawks will come down throw a batch of birds , the birds are to quick for them, i never seen them get lucky yet , another way to get them is to watch the male carrying to the nest , what you do about that is up to you

things have got thatbad with me, this weekthe birds havent beenout once anbd i wont be sending this week. last week the birds came from traing trapped straight through the door (we thought training them like this would stop attacks) about 5 secs after them trapping i seen this black in the corner of my eye, the hawk trapped straight through the door afterthe birds into the section. theyflew for about 3 hours after this.this has now sickend me so much, i rather play a round of golf now.

i was shown a very good way to get rid of hawks and none of your neibours would no.try to get hold of a seamless fish tank one thats made of nothing but glass.polish it up so mutch that you think its invisable when you step a way from it.put a bird that you no longer want under it place out side near loft .hawk sees bird but not glass hawk dives at bird hawk hits glass tank has very brocken neck.this was given to me by a game keeper and for a few hours work on polishing tank realy worked for me.

FLYING RATS ,,EATING ALL SORTS OF INFECTED BIRDS, WOULDNT WANT TO SEE THEM SUFFER, JUST WOULDNT WANT TO SEE THEM???

IF THE PUBLIC GOT THIS SAYING IN THERE HEAD, WITH AVIAN FLU AROUND, REMEMBER SOME MIGRATE, THINGS COULD BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERANT

Had a peragrine strike our youngsters this year. Only got 9 out of 21 back 2 of which had to be destroyed as they were smashed up really bad, 1 other hit a tree and smashed her crop open and another reported with broken legs 26 miles away. Felt gutted for days after. They have destroyed my whole young bird team for this year, but I think they have as much right to the skies as our birds. I know this will kick up a stir but I hope the hawks are still in the skies for my children to enjoy and their chilrens children too!!! We should be trying to come up with deterants that work not going on about the best ways of destroying these hawks.

Sorry Toon in my opinion we should wipe the Barstewards out before they totally destroy our great sport.

What I suggest people having problems with sparrowhawks should do is to make a Larson style trap to catch them in.

I have included a few links for details on how to make one.

A few fanciers in my club have made these this year and have caught 8 sparrowhawks between them since the beginning of March.

A lot will depend on the area you live in however if you are in the countryside these traps are excellent, if on the otherhand you live in town /city and have neighbours from hell this type of trap might not be the answer. Hope this will be of some help to someone.
