bren23 Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 just started pigeons looking at racing y/bs this year, do i send birds to all 7/8 races or different. advice please. ps pompey mick what a helpful man thanks again mick
pigeonchested Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 If I were you I would split the y.b.s into two teams and send them on alternate weeks. I would also stop a few after 2 races: ;D in my experience y.b.s need to be raced in the year of yheir birth. Best of luck to you bren.
TheSaddler Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Train them hard but not too much racing!
Tony C Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I would give them 4 races max. Dont race them when they're moulting around their head or the cover feathers on their wings. Good luck.
jimmy white Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 give them plenty training, see how the races turn out, and stop a few for next year
Guest Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I train 4 times a week during youngbird racing, train with 2 friends aswell daily to teach them to break from batches. After first couple of races, stop a few for next year then a couple more races stop some more and so on. Always thinking of the future. Babies don't mind lots of training but you can send them that one race too far. Each year though I have trained hard a few youngbirds off my distance stock but not raced them, then as yearlings raced them over the channel to Bergerac and they have invariably turned out to be my best Channel pigeons. Food for thought.
bren23 Posted April 27, 2006 Author Report Posted April 27, 2006 the fed i'm joining normally race south but this year looks like north, so should i train just south road for next year, or send north, will they turn south alright, complecated all this. thanks for advice lots to think about .
Guest Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 Why not train them both ways, and pick your races. Will make them think more going different directions. I train youngsters on all points of the compass. I also know a guy on the coast sent youngbirds south one week racing then north the following week. He alternated through the youngbird season and never dropped a bird.
Mike Lycett Posted April 27, 2006 Report Posted April 27, 2006 I'd be inclined to race the programme through with them - providing they're fit & in good feather & health of course. Not about the quantity you keep, but the quality & you'll only find that out on a Saturday.
