I have a hen who laid on the loft floor two days ago. I decided to let her stay there and popped the egg into a nest bowl. Today she has laid her second egg in her nestbox but just on the floor, even though there was an empty nest bowl there. I've put the floor egg with it and placed both into a bowl exactly where it was laid but, neither the hen nor the cock are sitting on it.   Might they sit on them later?  I do have some fantails which laid about four/five days ago, they're on plastic eggs now - should I put the eggs under them or wait and see if the hen goes on the eggs? :-/

UNLIKELY THEY WILL SIT ON THEM  BUT IF YOU TAKE THE BOWL OUT AND LEAVE THE EGGS WHERE THEY WERE LAID  THEY WILL SIT ON THEM BUT THIS IS ONLY MY OWN EXPERIENCE AS I HAVE HAD BIRDS LAY ON THE FLOOR AND TRIED THE SAME AS YOU AND I TOOK THE BOWL OUT AND THEY SAT BACK ON THE EGGS.

Brilliant Silverwings, thanks.

I've done just as you've suggested. (They still weren't on the eggs.)  I'm glad the loft is in the back garden and not  few miles away!! ::) ;D

So, when these eggs hatch could I move the fantails out of the dovecote and into the loft?

It was good advice (thanks Silverwings) to put plastic eggs in the nestbox and see if they set them.....both eggs got knocked on the floor!

A simple cure if its red mite Sue is to soak a beer mat in creosote and put it under the nest bowl.

Would someone please explain the connection with the beginning of the thread and the end of it and why or how you would come to that conclusion ?

Is red mite an all year round problem, only experience I have heard before is in greenhouses in summer to do with plants and is that the same insect ?

TWO DIFFERENT INSECTS ALLTOGETHER.THE ONE IN THE GREENHOUSES IS ACTUALLY RED SPIDER MITE.

I don't think that it's red mite.....have spoken to someone today who think it may well have been because I was in the loft with the hen waiting for her to lay - he thinks I disturbed her!!

How would I know if I have red mite?  The other birds are all OK - four hatched today.

dont think its red mite p,h, its usualy when their on young the get that, the red mite hide in the dark usualy under the ybs wings, but would do no harm to spray......one way to find ut is *expletive removed* your finger,[or prefferably someone elses ;D ;D]squeese a little blob of blood near the box or nesting place, in the dark,,go out with torch and if theres red mite, theyll be on that blood,,,,,,[they feed on the blood of the birds especialy ybs in the nest]if you squees one between your nails, its just bloodyou see,,,,,got me scratching now ;D ;D ;D

I TRIED THAT JIMMY AND MY BLOOD HAD THEM ALL GOING AROUND THE LOFT SINGING AND SMASHING THE PLACE UP, "I WONDER WHAT WAS IN MY BLOOD"LOL

NO SEARIOUS I DO NOT THINK ITS RED MITE, I WOULD TAKE THE EGGS AWAY AND SHUT THE PAIR OF BIRDS IN A NEST FOR A FEW DAYS.
