mealybar Posted June 12, 2006 Report Posted June 12, 2006 Spoken to the RPRA today; DEFRA haven't made their minds up yet, but they are hoping for a decision before the end of the week. As a consequence any channel racing planned this for this weekend is cancelled.

mealybar Posted June 12, 2006 Report Posted June 12, 2006 Really strange, I phoned the RPRA about 20 mins before posting up what I was told (posting 5:07pm). Got email dated 5:08pm from the BICC secretary saying that they had the phonecall saying were on for channel racing but only to as far as Bordeaux. Madness!!, but its great to finally have a DEFRA decision
Henrik Posted June 13, 2006 Author Report Posted June 13, 2006 Must be official now as Ive finally got an E-Mail from the RPRA. Better late than Never eh.....................
Henrik Posted June 13, 2006 Author Report Posted June 13, 2006 Racing From France/Belgium DEFRA has advised the situation concerning pigeon racing in the UK and beyond has been based on a risk assessment which has been kept under review. Ministers have now decided to allow gatherings for racing from Belgium and Northern France subject to the following conditions: * Pigeons cannot be liberated any further than 400 miles into France. This means that liberations can take place from as far south as the sites at Bordeaux, Bergerac, Mont Lucon and Nevers. This limit will take into account the areas of recent infection in South Eastern France. * Such races will be subject to the same notification and biosecurity conditions in the General Licence for races within the British Isles. * There is a new requirement of isolation for 7 days for all birds racing from outside the British Isles (rising to 21 days for birds returning after more than 72 hours). * Races from outside the British Isles can only take place until Monday 31 July when DEFRA will review the position again in view of the approaching autumn migration period. They will also immediately review the position, and potentially re-impose the ban on racing from outside the British Isles, if the disease situation changes in the meantime. The full licence conditions will be published as soon as they are received. We anticipate that the earliest we will be able to race again from France is the weekend of 24th June. It is imperative that all RPRA organisations and non affiliated organisations that use our services liaise with the Racing Support Department to advise permit and ferry requirements for 24th June onwards either by e mail to lindasmith@rpra.org, donna@rpra.org or telephone 01452 858244 (Linda) or 858245 (Donna). Although we have permits as per your original race programmes clearly some of you will require shorter distances and so new permits will need to be applied for. PIGEON_MAN Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 ROSE I READ IT AS THE BIRDS THAT RETURN FROM A FRENCH RACE HAVE TO BE ISOLATED FOR 7 DAYS IS THAT WHAT YOUR SAYING.
Guest Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 there is no way they could police that is there?
PIGEON_MAN Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 WELL NO SUPPOSE IT WOULD BE LEFT TO THE INTEGRITY OF THE MEMBERS,SAME AS IT IS NOW IF A BIRD RETURNS FROM A RACE AFTER SO LONG AWAY THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ISOLATED BUT HOW MANY PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO IT.
Henrik Posted June 13, 2006 Author Report Posted June 13, 2006 Thats the way I read it as well but if thats whats got to be to get 500ml races well I dont see it as being too much of a hardship
Henrik Posted June 13, 2006 Author Report Posted June 13, 2006 It is up to the Integrity off the members but its not only their sport that they jepeordise if they dont do it but everyone else as well so if you know of somebody who doesnt follow the guidelines they should be dealt with by the club before we get stopped from racing altogether
PIGEON_MAN Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 COME OFF IT HENRIK AS A SECRETARY OF A CLUB HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW IF MY MEMBERS ARE FOLLOWING THE RIGHT GUIDELINES,I DARE SAY THAT THERE ISN,T MANY CLUBS OR FEDS WHO ARE FOLLOWING THEM 100%.I KNOW THAT IS WRONG BUT THAT IS THE WAY THINGS ARE I,M AFRAID.
Guest Posted June 13, 2006 Report Posted June 13, 2006 yeah i think it does mean 400 miles from the northen french coast ''* Pigeons cannot be liberated any further than 400 miles into France. This means that liberations can take place from as far south as the sites at Bordeaux, Bergerac, Mont Lucon and Nevers. This limit will take into account the areas of recent infection in South Eastern France.''
Henrik Posted June 13, 2006 Author Report Posted June 13, 2006 Shouldnt be too hard t check on the race sheets if a bird is away one week then it wouldnt be able to be sent the next week. Difficulty comes in with the bird that doesnt return within the 72hrs. everyone should remember though that it will only take one to get caught out not complying with the guidelines and they will stop racing altogether until this bird flu is eradicated and that could be 10 yrs down the line
