Hi i have just had a new loft and i have been building in it for some time now. It has come for me to start building nest boxes. The only problem is that i dont know what size to have??? :-/ I have got the ceramic bowls and i just want to know how small i can possibly have the boxes because i need to save space...Also i need to know if i need a door on the front of them so i can close them off???

any help is really appretiated... ;)

I've always found that your nest box size is determined by which "fronts" you use. (that's if you buy ready made ones) In my opinion doors on the front are essential. Don't forget when pairing up there are times that you need to shut them in. Also depending on which system you fly you may need to keep them contained in their boxes.

thanks for the advice morton... I am not going to buy ready made fronts, i think i will just make them myself.sorry to mislead you but I do not have racing pigeons i have got rolers.

Has anyone got any sizes or measuments that they would advise me to build my boxes too???

May I also add that if you are building roller boxes, consider building them out of white melamine, easy to clean, can be wiped down with a cloth soaked in a mild bleach solution and the white surface makes it very easy to see if any of your birds had bad droppings.

Hope this helps

Thanks rockinrick and hyacinth that is some very helpful infomation...;)

Can i just ask if i have them about 10 inches square i have worked out that i will not have enough room for the other bird to stand by the side of the bowl in the nest...Will this matter or will the other bird just get on a perch somewhere else in the loft???

sorry for all the questions...;)

if you can make them deeper the birds could perch on the front

when they have 2 youngsters i find them a bit small

hope this helps
