Ignore Internet info on Red Planet image

An e-mail alert circling the Internet reporting Mars will look as large as the full moon the night of Aug. 27 is cosmic spam.

“It’s just, on a basic fourth-grade arithmetic level, it’s just impossible,” said a baffled Bruce Mattson, a science and technology specialist at the McAuliffe Challenger Center at Framingham State College.

The moon is on average 238,000 miles from Earth; at its closest, Mars is tens of millions of miles away.

The Internet e-mail causing such a ruckus states: “Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history.”

So who am I to say ... Be nice, so will keep a eye out any way.
