One of the frequent questions im asked is regarding the value of a pigeon. As most people know i sell a few birds and advertise most weeks in the BHW and im pertners with Raymond Moleveld in Holland.

We have over the years visited many lofts to purchase champions and young birds etc and we have come up with a formula which i believes works very well.

Pigeon X is worth the value of 6 of his/her children.

I will give you a few excamples.

Grand children of the Kannibal (van dyck) sell for £300 each so i would value a son/dtr at £1800. Using this formula great grnd children would £50 each, about write.

G-children of The Boss (LPW) sell for £40 so a son would be worth £240 etc etc.

There are lots of people way over pricing pigeons at the moment, they need to remember that if you buy a grandson for £150 then the pigeons you breed are actually ggchildren so there along way away.

So i always value a pigeon to same value as 6 of his children and that way i never over or under price them! what do you think?

Thats a good idea that  and sounds about right to me. Think ill sell my national winner at the end of the season, so i would say her children are worth at least say £60 each (as other birds same way bred have been topping feds and winning out of turn) so that means id value her at £360.

GEZ,IN NO WAY AM I TRYING TO DEGRADE YOUR BIRD IN ANY WAY BUT IF I WAS A POTENTIONAL BUYER I WOULD BE ASKING THIS QUESTION,WHAT AS SHE BRED YERSELF AS I WOULD BE BUYING HER TO BREED OFF NOT TO RACE,WHEN IT COMES TO BUYING PIGEONS TO BREED OFF I THINK THIS IS WHERE A LOT OF PEOPLE MAKE A MISTAKE BY JUST GOING ON RACING PERFORMANCES OR PEDIGREES.NOW IF YOU WERE SELLING THE PARENTS OF YOUR HEN THEN THAT WOULD BE DIFFERANT.

Pigeon Man

You are right but remember that if you are going to bring a pigeon to loft like gezzas National Winner it the qualities she is bringing thats important. Her direct offspring may not be top racers but her children may be very potent breeders and in time give someone a very strong platform to build on. Most good breeding pairs breed lets say 3 good pigeons and then they deteriate year after year.

Give me a top racer any day and then i can bred my own stock pigeons then, rather than a few good birds you can create a good family ;)

I would say a pigeon is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. I went to a sale last year and it was predicted that a pigeon called the Dickens Cock would go for approx. £1500 but it actually went for £4000 at auction. Also birds that the owner didnt think would make much, were going for crazy prices. I would buy Gez's pigeon for £360 or more any day of the week, if I was still racing.

THE QUESTION IS THOUGH CAN SHE OR ANY TOP RACER OR PIGEON WITH A PEDIGREE AS LONG AS YOUR ARM PASS ON THEIR QUALITIES,HAVE A LOOK AT THE POSTING UNDER EYESIGN REAL OR FAKE REPLIES NUMBER 305 AND 306,THIS WILL EXPLAIN MORE ON HOW I SEE IT ABOUT BUYING PIGEONS FOR BREEDING.

Don't agree with that pricing strategy Stu...

You can get 6 off one pigeon in a season dead easy - that means that everything from that point onwards is effectively free of charge.

So...  I know off many world class pigeons who's offspring sell at £500 each.  There's no way that the owners would ever sell the Champion for 6 times that figure.

pigeons the same way bred as her have topped the fed for my good mate, her cousin was 2nd national when i won it.if i thought it was a one off, im not the sort of person to sell it juist to get the cash, the line is a proven fam,ily and as i say they are topping the fed flying on a tough south east route.she was bred by my uncle, when he packed in my good mate john 'the farm' roberts bought his birds so he has the birds at stock now. and it is him who has been winning with them and it was him who was 2nd national to me.

ALL BRILLIANT GEZ THER,S NO GETTING AWAY FROM IT BUT AS I SAID I OR ANYONE ELSE WOULD BE BUYING HER FOR BREEDING OFF AND  I WOULD WANT TO KNOW IF SHE HAD BRED ANYTHING HERSELF.

The reason why i apply this rule is you can often get caught in fashions and one seaon a price for a pigeon which would of halfed by the following year.

Mike i agree its formula that suits the buyer more than the seller and im often in a position where people say "make an offer" so thats how i work my offer!!!!

Good discussion tho!!

ok we can sell her parents for a £1,500 ;-)

AT LEAST BUYING THEM GEZ WE KNOW THEY HAVE BRED A NATIONAL WINNER AND OTHER,S,I TAKE IT FROM YOU NOT ANSWERING MY QUESTION THAT SHE AS NOT BRED ANYTHING.

DONT KNOW IF YOU LOOKED AT JACK BARKEL POSTING STUART BUT HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK YOU COULD HAVE CHARGED FOR THE 12 YOUNSTER,S THAT WERE BRED OFF THE TWO NATIONAL WINNERS.WHAT A GOLDMINE THEY WOULD BE FOR THE SELLER BUT FOR THE BUYER DISASTER AS NOT ONE OUT OF THE 12 DID ANYTHING WORTH MENTIONING (JACKS WORDS)

Another thing you have to consider when buying / selling pigeons

It's not necessarily how much the pigeon is worth on the open market or what the true valuation of a pigeon is - it's what value the owner of it has.

i.e If a pigeon is worth £100 and you believe it to be worth £100 but its worth £200 to me - then £100 aint gonna get it !

sorry pigeon man, yeah she has bred a winner :) 1st club 3rd fed. b4 she won the national i never bred anything out of her, first youngsters ive had this yr. and a few are in stock as she has been paired to a good pigeon at a mate of mines. :)

the race i won was yes. the welsh south east national open to all of wales, 5,031 birds i think. She would have topped the combine only they wont let us in it, there were over 10,000 birds in that as they are all liberated together.

yesterday a bird bred the same way was 2nd club for my good mate.
