Guest Paulo Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 My neighbours loft jealous springs to mind look at all that space the lucky man
Guest Paulo Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 damn got to go out on site I'll put some more on later duty calls
Guest Paulo Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks Pete, yeah mate its going on just tons more work to be done i've got three tons of top soil to spread over the garden and as the council have dumped it right in front of the loft and fenced the garden off its going to have to be shifted by hand so its all time plus my gran still has to move all her hens down to her new allotment and with working fulltime I only have weekends spare so its going to be a case of trying to get all the odds and ends sorted out in the winter as best as I can. Still can't wait until next year. Thanks for the offer of the young uns but I've got enough at the minute. 5x pairs in total plus one of the gears on the allotment is giving me a pair of stock birds so should have enough to breed from next year. Aiming for around 30 youngsters to race. Gutted been stuck inside on a day like this just been up to Bishop Auckland to do an asbestos inspection and drove past the pigeon lofts up there all the retired blokes have their birds out and were chilling in the sun I am damn jealous.lol
Guest Paulo Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks for all the advice and birds people have offered me on here its all been a really big help.
jimmy white Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 you deserve it paulo, for all the work and effort youve put in,,,,best of luck :)
Guest Paulo Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Thanks Jimmy to be honest I was going to pack in keeping them with getting booted off the old allotments but I'm glad I didn't take the easy option now cause I've ended up getting interested in the racing side again and ended up with a better loft cause the old one was an eyesaw and the pigeon men down the new allotments are top blokes and the crack is great. Just a bit sickened about not being able to race this year.
Guest CS Posted August 10, 2006 Report Posted August 10, 2006 Lovely birds, mate.. best of luck when your racing them next year Paulo
Keepsmilingqueen Posted August 11, 2006 Report Posted August 11, 2006 what a lovely looking set up paulo, good luck with racing next year, its been my 1st racing season alone this year since taking on my fathers birds after his death in feb this year, im only 20 and female so im a bit of an alien species in my club as everyone is male and over 60 !! ;D it must be lovely to be on an allotment i can remember as a child before we moved house going down the allotment with dad on bourges day waiting for the birds and the amount of fellow pigeon men that would pop in for a chat. i miss that now i have the birds in the back garden so im kinda cut out of the loop but it makes cleaning out much easier with them just out of the back door ;D ps if your short of birds next year feel free to send a few rings i have janssens direct from paige and pouw bros (im told they are soposed to be good) tho i as yet have no concept of strains and systems (ive just raced natural with the Oldiesand there results have been ok 3 club 1sts aint too bad for a novice with no clue) sharron xxx
Guest Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 Great looking set up Kiddo. I sometimes envy people flying on allotments, the nearest flyer to me is about 8/9 miles away, miss the crack. I had a back yard loft in England, but just a couple of minutes walk from the allotments and when I was starting up there was always someone there to help out if I had any problems. Good luck, you deserve it.
Guest Paulo Posted August 12, 2006 Report Posted August 12, 2006 I know the feeling keepsmilingqueen I'm only 25 so am the youngest in the club. Some of my mates down the gym found out I had them and have been taking the mick. I don't look like the type according to them. I don't care through its a great hobby. Great results those I hope I do that well in my first season its great your keeping the birds on after your dads death. My dad packed in after his dad died because he felt things weren't the same anymore. Your results are certainly doing his memory proud. Best of luck with the young birds this year. Nice to see a fellow Durham lass on here. Thanks Hyacinth your right about the allotments its great crack but sometimes I think it would be nice to have them nearer to home. Mainly when getting up at 5.00am to clean them out lol. It is nice to have help on hand when you need it through. Good thing about this site its like a virtual allotment.
Guest Paulo Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 What would you say is the best thing to have in front of the loft. Grass or just concrete/flagstones? Some people reckon that pigeons need a pickround on the grass to stop them going to the fields and it makes them happier. Some people reckon concrete is better as can wash down easy with jeyes fluid and stops them picking up germs and worms etc. Interested in what peoples perferences are.
Guest Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 I prefer concrete, can be washed off easily and I don't like my birds picking on the ground.
Guest Paulo Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 Thanks Hyacinth I'm strongly inclined towards concrete at minute as I work in the building trade and a few of my mates would happily lay me a slab down on the weekend for a couple of cases of beers.
jimmy white Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 agree with hyacinth , we often spend all our time cleaning lofts . when the cocci oocysts and worm eggs etc are all thriving in healthy damp conditions [to them]out side the loft, better with concrete slabs or chips which are easy to spray and brush down, with disenfectant [virkon s]
Keepsmilingqueen Posted August 15, 2006 Report Posted August 15, 2006 i dont think my mum would be best pleased if i suggested that we concrete over the garden lol ;D
