Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 hi can you tell me how when i pair a blue hen to my very good red cock, that i get dark chequers and thats all my mate got out the cock aswell, i had my first ever red out of him last month,(well the first ever red he has had),i thought i would get reds mealies, blues and blue cheqs, not velvet/black cheqs, ben
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Does the Red Cock have black marks on feathers ?
barlbylofts Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 could have dark check in the blood from way back, grand parents / perants/ext
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 no darks in ped,and the red cock has a couple of black splashes
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Red cock is:- heterozygos for Ash Red homozygos for checker
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 I asked about the dark splashes 'cos I knew beautyhomer would know the importance ;D, its to do with dominant and recessive genes (I think) - so am I right in thinking that black splashes mean recessive red ? I have a red cock with black splashes who has produced only one red out of 7 youngsters when paired to a red hen, the youngsters have been blue chequers or blue bar, with one mealie cock and one red hen as off spring - I find it quite fascinating ;D
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 The black splashes found on some ash red cocks have nothing to do with recessive red, this is a seperate colour altogether.Ash red is dominant over blue so when an ash red and a blue are paired together all young cocks will be split for ash red and blue but appear ash red.The black splashes show that one of the parents was carrying blue. These cocks will be able to breed reds and blues
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Just when I thought I understood it - you've burst me bubble :'(
Dave A Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 i thought that black splashes on a red or mealy meant it was a cock if it does not have them it means its a hen
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 i thought that black splashes on a red or mealy meant it was a cock if it does not have them it means its a hen Only ash red cocks have the black splashes but only if they have one ash red gene and one blue gene.If they have two ash red genes they will not have any splashes and will only breed reds
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Just when I thought I understood it - you've burst me bubble :'( Sorry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
Dave A Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 so beautyhomer what can i expect from the yello and the ble pied the yellow is the cock ignore the last pic i got a bit exited
Guest REDFOXKRAUTHS Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 may i ask what breed is the yellow???kilpatrick????
Dave A Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 its a kirkpatrick mate and its a latebred and pic was taken 6 days ago
Dave A Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 one more question would these yellows carry a black splash if it is a cock as all cocks bred carry no splashes
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Hi,Yellow is nothing more than a dilute ash red.Dilute is sex linked.Your yellow cock does not appear to have any black splashes so we will assume he is pure ash red (homozygos) The pair will breed yellow hens and red cocks. Some of these young may have white feathers. If the cock is homozygos for checker all the young will be heterozygos checkers. If not you will get mealies and cream bars.
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 one more question would these yellows carry a black splash if it is a cock as all cocks bred carry no splashes Which yellows?
REDCHEQHEN Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Why is a 'dilute red' a yellow ? ( when its red ) and I'm not being funny when I ask ( because of the above ) what colour is a cream bar ( cos I'm not expecting it to be cream, again because of the above ) Confused ??
Guest beautyhomer Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 A yellow is a combination of ash red, checker and dilute genes A cream bar is a combination of ash red,bar and dilute. If the yellow cock pictured is carrying the gene for bar (checker is dominant),half his young will be barred when paired to a barred hen
